Own Post Deletion

ok I was cleaning up my wants and haves in the buy/sale/trade section and was wondering is there anyway we could delete some of our old posts so as to reduce space?

Hi Steve,

I was going to say, go into edit and check delete, but apon checking it seems that you are only allowed to do that with topics you have made, and not posts.

Now I'm a little curious why it isn't the other way around, or why we can't do both.

The admins likely will not add post deleting options to the forums. This would break up conversations in discussion threads and lead to confusion. I would recommend editing posts in buy/sell/trade forums instead of adding numerous replies which would later need to be deleted.

problem with that is if any changes are made to the trade/want list which tends to happen alot and you just edit the changes their is no way for people to know of the changes.

I know that in previous BST threads, the authors often change the thread title. Something like Black Falcon's for Trade becomes Black Falcon's For Trade: Updated

Hopefully one fan's want list will not be constantly bumped to the top of B/S/T. Starting new threads when you are looking for a new items is a better idea. It allows older threads to fall to the bottom while new topics (ie: the latest Target sale) can be at the top of the forum.

Currently the BST forum has over 1300 topics. This is ok because most are irrelevant after one week. Posts in this forum have very short lifespans. Basically we will not be changing the forum format for you. Other members have found solutions (noted above) to editing want lists. We suggest that you try them.

I tend to feel a bit guilty when posting a thread in that forum to announce some auctions I have running or something like that, and then in a couple weeks or so, if I happen to post another. I hate cluttering up the place, but sometimes it's hard to just edit the post with new things when it got pushed way down the list.

Would it be advisable to delete a topic such as this? ..Maybe it wouldn't be for some reason, but I think it's worth asking. (I have a couple with no replies, that I thought I could do away with.)

That's not a field day, that's a lot of work. The reason we keep all the posts is to maintain the history of the site. The posts you are referring to don't take up that much space. By keeping everything, we can refer back to anything that has happened. I've been involved in sites that allowed deletion and it makes for some interesting conversations. One example happened during an argument. Someone made a very inflammatory comment and several people got on their case. He then deleted his post and the responders looked like they were picking on him for nothing. People tend to be more careful about what they post if they know they can't delete it.

I know where your coming from Josh but i'm not refering to arbitrary deletion in all of the threads but of just the buy/sell/trade section which you must admit that posts beyond a certain point don't really have any use for the site as a whole.

That's cool, I'm glad we agree on something. I'm still a bit confused as to why it matters so much to you. You've said that we should delete them to save space, but they don't really take up that much room. You said that you wanted to be able to clean up your old want lists. Ben said that starting new ones is fine. So I guess I don't see why this needs to be done. In fact, I'm positive that this won't be implemented, because it would cause too many problems across the entire board. So, while I understand why it could be useful on occasion, you're not going to be able to convince any of the higher powers that this needs done.
