Isn't this rather contradictory? Surely by putting people on ignore, aren't you, in a way, limiting *their* freedom to express themselves?

Anyway I see no real purpose for this. We have two types of trouble-makers here - advertisers for companies/porn, who are banned almost instantly, and members who are bad tempered/insolent/ignorant in some way, and these are usually either given a talking to or eventually banned. The admins can take care of both of these so I see no reason to put in an 'ignore' feature; Blueandwhite is right that it would only cause a splintered and fractured community, and make threads a bit confusing.

I won't weigh in on the Ignore issue, at least not at this time, but I wanted to point out that while you have the freedom to say what you want, you do *NOT* have the right to be heard. So no, you cannot limit someone else's freedom to express themselves by using an ignore feature because they don't have the freedom to force you to listen to them.

Exactly, so in turn you have the freedom to ignore them, just by not reading the post (you should recognise the bad grammar in the first 2 words or so ;)).

So technically, you already have this freedom to just ignore someone. You just choose not to read the post. No ignore function needed to make things more complicated, confusing or even hateful.

GameFaqs became much more enjoyable when I turned on the ignore feature. However, this community is MUCH smaller than GameFaqs and even the most unpopular CC members have nothing on some of the GameFaqs users. Trust me, we're lucky with the community we have. I don't think anything needs to change.
I agree, CC is a great community, and CS isn't bad either. Eurobricks is a bit lower, and GameFAQs is only higher the 4chan when it comes to the level of worthwhile posts, CC the best Internet community I've ever seen.

Is this whole discussion the result of a single member?

Steve
I think so.

I can and most certainly will live without that feature too. :)

Hello, I'm not a member here, but I believe this thread had continued on to the point of ridiculousness.

It is obiously clear that the "thread starter" only created this topic so that he could further humiliate and prove his mightyness over the "certain member."
I am dismayed that the rest of you played along with his childish post.

It is time for this tread to be locked and a temporary suspension given to the "thread starter".

But then again, that's only one lurker's humble opinion.

I have seen this feature on a number of forums, & have even used it before, most notably on gaming forums where the admins are a great deal less inclined to moderate bad behavior than they are here.

On most forums blocked posts still appear in a thread, but just as a short entry with the users nick & a link to display the full post if you really want to read it (usually used to make certain threads easier to understand).

I think it's a useful forum feature. There may not be as great a need to use it here due to the dedication of the CC mods & admins, but I'm all for usefull gadgetry & options.

The whole "Freedom of Speech" debate is probably best left to other forums, as I have never seen any true example of that high standard upheld, anytime, anywhere...

I would also be suspicious of Ridiculousness intentions, me thinks he protests too much ... for a lurker ;)

Ah, exactly. Somewhere (at least in the old TOS) it said something along these lines:
You do not have Freedom of Speech here. Signing up as a member means you are agreeing to abide by our rules, which include restrictions of what can be said...
Along the lines of the bad grammar and know it all member(s), can we not turn a blind eye? I know I've overlooked lots of grammatical errors (perhaps not as obvious as some), and we must be especially sympathetic to our members who's first language is not English.
I also know plenty of younger teens who typ lke ths. Sure it makes it hard to read, but there is a point to be tolerant. I understand if we need to ask them to try harder to think through their posts if it is a persistent problem. About trolling, well, it's against the TOS, so shouldn't action be taken that way? We don't need to add a "censorship" thing to our forum just because one or two members are trolling/using bad grammar. That really is selling the diary farm over one sick cow.

*I guess the new fad is to open a new account and post that way. I've seen it happen a lot lately ;).

I'm not going to comment on the "Freedom of Speech" issue, since it might cause a huge unrest amongst people. Also it's not related to Lego or Castle in any way.

And Felix, I don't think the only issue is grammar. Of course I do tolerate foreign people (What choice do I have, I'm Turkish  ). And I have no issues with that kind of thing. But I try my best to use proper English while posting and seeing native speakers not doing the same thing, kind of pisses me off. Also, apparently you haven't seen the insulting posts of the certain member. That's the kind of behavior that made me support Nelson's idea. I come here to enjoy my hobby more and learn stuff from other members, not read flame posts by members who satisfy their egos by insulting others.

This is my side of the argument. I will post no more on this subject, since it has gone too far.

Have a good day everyone. And thank you for the discussion.

I'm inclined to agree. That being said, I'm a bit uncomfortable with the thread starter's new signature which directly links to a certain member's inappropriate outbursts on other forums. At first I thought about PMing him, but I don't really want to get too involved in this feud.

Here's one longtime forum member who agrees with the lurker... I don't like "certain member" much either but I think 'Ridiculousness" hit the nail on the head.

Regardless if the subject of the original post was directed at a particular individual, the original post does contain a valid question. And to that end - no, at this time users cannot block or ignore specific users.

However, this thread is getting a bit out of hand, and now that the question has been answered I will lock this topic. If you need to discuss this further please PM me.

If you wish to discuss Freedom of Speech and this forum, please direct your attention to THIS THREAD.
