The idea has been in my head to create a Legocustoms site....It would take some time, but having an archive would be worth it.

Thoughts?

I don't think it would be good to make it like MOCpages. This should be more the best of the best. People have accounts on all kinds of different image hosting sites to show off their stuff. As a realted project we could have a post or something which would have a regularaly updated list of builders and their accounts on various sites. Someone could just PM the person in charge to have links put up to their stuff. Anybody like this, or am I just coming up with more useless random thoughts like usual?

It will probably take a long time, but we can just try making a list for one category and see how it will turn out. CastleLord, I will send you a pm with more info tomorrow.

Wouldn't it be easier to simply start a few threads to compile a fairly comprehensive list of AAA MOCs in a variety of categories. Honestly, there are literally 1000s of fantastic MOCs but even then there are a few that stand above the rest. I would love to see fans pick their favourite castles, towers, tudor buildings, vignettes and scenes. Community members could then vote on their favorites in order to develop a list of the best-of-the-best.

I love all of the wonderful MOCs we see here but I really like the idea of a compendium of greatest hits as it were. So long as the selection process is open to members I think it's a great idea.

That's a great idea, but I don't know if the voting is a good idea. Maybe a couple of people can chose the best ones, since there would probably be a lot of MOCs to chose from.
Maybe we could start a test thread?

Fair enough.

Perhaps it's time we put this idea into practice. I've always felt that newer members have missed out on some fantastic MOCs simply because they weren't around when they were first displayed. I'm going to start a test thread in Castle MOCs where people can provide their input. I'm kind of interested in what response we'll get. Going with your earlier post in this thread, I'm going to focus on towers. Hopefully the response is fairly positive.

Maybe it would be better if people don't post the same MOC again. I think Noddy's tower would be on almost everyone's list, because it's a great MOC, and there are not many towers that are better. This way there will be much less different MOCs. Or we could post our top ten (or less) favourite MOCs.

We can just wait see how it works out in this thread.

Maybe I'm missing something, but isn't something like the Castle category at The Brothers Brick a lot like what you're trying to do?

A little bit, but they haven't blooged all great MOCs, and only newer MOCs. It's also hard to find for example a list of tudor buildings in their archives.

As far as I can tell, The Brothers Brick simply archives articles (not unlike Classic-Castle). The idea here is to have a fairly comprehensive index of MOCs so that AFOLs both new and old can easily find links to inspiring MOCs they may have forgotten about or never seen.

An archive of articles can take several minutes to search through, even if you know what you're looking for. Moreover, if you've never seen a certain MOC you're not likely to go searching for it either.

A simple indexing system would allow fans to quickly search for a specific type of MOC for ideas or inspiration. It also gives exposure to some great builders who may have been overlooked when they first posted their works.

I think that you are all on to something with this MOCs archive. It could be very useful to the community.

I like the way you are going about getting a list of good MOCs, but I have a couple of suggestions, if you don't mind. I suggest starting a Master List thread with the MOCs in their categories. Then it could be all in one place and be easily modified by the "owner". Of course you will have to work out who owns it. It appears that DNL and Blueandwhite are heading this up. That should be worked out by them.

Thank you for the mention, but TBB doesn't really do what is being suggested here. We have categories in which we place each post, but its not a comprehensive list. We do occasionally miss things and the categories are not in list form. Whoever looks for MOCs has to look at each post in the archive.

Take care,
Josh

Thank you for the suggestions.

Indeed, the final idea is to create a comprehensive master list. Still, given the huge assortment of incredible MOCs out there I felt that it was better to create a set of sub-lists that could then be used to efficiently build the aforementioned master list. Currently I'm planning on putting up a sub-list every few days. As to the master list itself; I'm not sure whether it would be better handled by myself or somebody such as a moderator who has greater editing authority. In either situation, I hope that we would see a stickied master list that could be used by members for easy reference. Modifying the list to include future MOCs would then be considerably easier.

As the master-list is likely to entail a few hundred MOCs, I still feel that starting with separate lists will make sorting the member suggestions far easier in the initial stages.

I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear. I think you are doing the right thing with your sub-lists. I didn't know if you planned to create a Master list, so I was suggesting it.

Keep up the good work!

I know the TBB castle category isn't exactly like what this will (should) be, I just thought it would be a good place to start when looking for creations to submit/include in this archive.

I agree with DNL about not listing the same creation more than once.
