Yes, but sometimes that is all you have to say. Sometimes the babies are screaming and the dinner is burning and you've still managed to somehow post a MOC and someone says some comments about it and you really just want to say "thanks" to let them know that you read the comment and are appreciative of any compliments that may have been received. Sometimes you just want to say "thanks" to further the spirit of friendship that in turn leads to further intelligent discussion. Sometimes you want to say "thanks" but don't have that much more to add at the time. Should you then not be able to say "thanks" because you've nothing further to add at that time?
Politeness and friendly comments and chit chat are part of the glue that holds commuinities together. A community is built from a network of relationships, and every time someone says "thank you" to someone else, it further strengthens that relationship, which in turn strengthens the community, which in turn promotes further discussion, much of which will be intelligent. To say that one cannot make short comments, such as "thank you' or "I really love this" or "me too", means that a lot of posters will not post so much, which will weaken the community, and thereby limit the amount of intelligent discussion that can take place. If you alienate your users by making them feel stupid for only having a "thank you" to say at a certain time, you're going to find yourself in a place with fewer and fewer active posters, which will in turn lead to less and less intelligent discussion (since that seems to be the only goal of this site). I really don't think this is a good thing.
Gotta run -- the babies are screaming -- it happens sometimes.
