Less "Life"

Post by erikut »

It seems like theres bin less and less posts, topics and administrative things here. The latest official contest was the CCC2 and after that we had the battles.

If you see the FBTB forums there are a lot of posts and no theres 2 (i think) official contest and 2 unofficial.

I just wanna know, is there any reson for it?

Well I certainly can't speak for the admins, but I do know that they put in a lot of time and effort into just keeping this site up and running. Prehaps this is not the most active LEGO community, but it is certainly one of the best, and most "on topic."

I'm not bothered by the lack of contests one bit. If there were an actual prize contest each month, they wouldn't be as competitive or as much fun. The admins and other members, (and TLC) dontated their own prizes, which adds up to be very expensive. Financially, it would be very difficult to run contests.

The battles contest run by Josh was a great idea. Private run contests are great, but can we really complain when there isn't one. Josh willingly parted with his sets for the contest, as likely anyone running such a contest would do.

However there are a few things about this site that I must say I am dissapointed with not being continued. The picture captioning was a great and funny thing to do, the seed part challenge was also a great contest (the prize wasn't needed).

I have also noticed a decline in user sent articles and how-to's. There is really no one to blame for this. The castle community is at an expected low for the moment. The first wave of KKII sets have been with us for a while, and I think that people are waiting for the release of the KKII part 2 sets, not to mention the vikings. I think we will see a spike in activity around these months.

Well thats all I have to say. I sure the admins can say more about this.

I'd have to agree with DM - we are in kind of a lull but things will go up and down, so all is well. Also -
Prehaps this is not the most active LEGO community, but it is certainly one of the best, and most "on topic."
It's all about quality over quantity... I get lost in some of the other forums - this one tends to be a nicely sized forum for controlled (aka, on topic & usually polite) conversation.

I do miss the picture captioning, and the How-to's taught me some tricks I hadn't considered... but I think the easier "how-to" sections have been covered, so although we might have to wait longer for the next one, it will probally be something cool.

I really have enjoyed the articles, by the way -

You both bring up good points about less activity at CC.com

The admins never intended to have contests at all times. The Colossal Castle Contest is special because it is once a year.

There have been less articles and that needs to be worked on. If any CC member has an article, send an email to me ( ellermann@NOSPAMgmail.com ) or one of the other admins and we will be happy to put it on the main page. In addition, many of the admins have busy lives and slow internet connections :( This leads to fewer articles and forum moderation than we would desire. Hopefully we can work on these issues.

It is also necessary to mention that involvement on website varies depending on the time of year and how busy people are. Some months we may have 6 articles while others can have over 20, it just depends.

I have created a new How-To article:

I can't speak for the picture captioning, but I discontinued the seed part challenge because of appearent lack of interest. If you want, I can test the waters again and get out a new seed part for May.

I think the reason there is a little less "life" here right now is because there is more real life going on. This is a rather busy time for a lot of people. Getting close to end of the school year, beginning of spring, etc. I know I am busier right now than during the winter. If you are bothered by the lull, then liven it up! Post MOCs or start new discussions, be part of the "life". Like you are doing that with this thread. :)

Take care,
Josh

I know I for one have had less time for LEGO since the weather turned nice. I've been doing a lot of yard work. In fact, I'm taking a vacation day tomorrow to finish cleaning up after the long winter we had.

As far as articles go, I think this post by Lenny on displays would make a great article. Especially the argument against making interiors. Maybe we could come to a consensus that large displays don't need interiors? I dread finishing my display. I know that as soon as I upload it, the first questions will be "does it open?" or "any interiors?" "Boy, sure would be nicer if there were interiors." etc... :)

BTW Nathan, nice article on instruments. Don't know how I missed it. It will definitely come in handy.
