Should I stop posting?

Post by TwoTonic Knight »

I mean, the promotion from Gong Farmer to Peasant! Wow! What a step up in the medieval world. I was enthralled. But what looms on the horizon? Villein? Eeeeeeuuuuuuuuuu! I wasn't tied to the land and now I will be? A step backward, indeed.

Oh wait, this is another post! My villein-hood weird creeps nearer on little rat feet!

The book that I have, which the names were pulled from, uses the terms interchangeably. Granted, it's a picture book, so probably not the definitive source.

The titles will be reworked when I get the time and a list of titles in the correct order. I asked for this in a previous message, but there was not much of a response.

A vilain is an habitant of a city (ville = villain).

Actually, my message was mostly a joke - I had looked over and noticed that people were Gong Farmers, peasants, etc. and I was amused that the next step seems to be a villein.

A villein is not a city dweller per se. In medieval terms, a villein was a serf, specifically a peasant that was one step removed from a slave. They owed some form of service to a lord, and could not voluntarily leave the lord's service. The service may be specific (taxes, a certain numbers of days of labor, specific duties) or simply the Lord's whim. They were usually tied to the land - i.e. they had to work a specific plot of the Lord's land and couldn't leave.

A peasant is a more generic term, usually meaning an agricultural laborer or other rural person. They may be a serf or villein, or they may be a freeman (a yeoman owned and cultivated his own land, for example, though he still might owe some form of military service). Thus, a peasant isn't a clear-cut step-up from a villein, but a villein is definately at the low end of peasant.

That is the issue, we don't have one! We are working on it though, and have a couple partial lists that will get worked together.

Has anything been decided for what comes after Villein? Or do I just stay at that status for the rest of my life....?
