This is to the best of my knowledge, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
This week(end) for people across the US and the Globe is
Mardi Gras. It originally celebrated the lead up Ash Wednesday of the Catholic faith, on which Catholics would show their devotion by sacrificing something for the season of Lent.
Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, was reserved by the people as a day of excess, to get all your partying out of you so that you could go into Lent without as much temptation (and repent

).
However, it is now just become an excuse to party for anyone, and being Catholic is not required. Mardi Gras is traditionally celebrated by parades and the throwing and collecting of beads, and it's colors are purple, green and gold.
