one thing I saw in a different board was that before you could login(even if you already had been a memebr and posted) you had to type a simple math problem such as 6+8. I know this could be easily evaded if the person running the spam bot typed it in themself buuuuut might stop a few more from logging in....

my two cents(roman money not greek you dolt)

Hey castlebuilder, if these spammers are really bothering you, you should perhaps PM an admin or mod instead of posting it here. You should also read Bruce's earlier post on the previous page.

Not sure if we're still doing this, but "icedrakonb" posted some rather unsavory items -- which could risk getting me fired or getting C-C blocked here at work.

Here's hoping the phpBB upgrade Tony mentioned in another thread reduces this sort of garbage.

It’s a hard one to counter sadly. These spammers mostly seem to be spambots of some type which continue to get better every time a countermeasure is taken. The only solution in the end is vigilance. The upgrade might fix the issue for a time but in the end its only temporary. I heard the odd scribble text someplaces use before you can post that one must decipher now has a few spambots that can get around them. If a few can now months away they all will.

Happens to anyone that has a site or forum online. Ran a forum for a while. Stupid spammers.

The solution at Forbidden Cove is to have each new member write why they are interested in Pirate LEGO. If we added this option to CC and personally approved each new member it would cut down on spam to a large degree. The downside is that it is harder for new members to join. Some may choose not to join for this reason.

Hey,

I think it's possible to ask a very easy question that any LEGO fan would know but would still defeat spambots. Something like "name any subtheme in Castle, check the set guide -link- if you need help with this". It would still involve a delay in that one of us would have to manually approve, but would be straightforward for any human.

Ben,

I have seen quite a few forums go to such a system. It is a pain but it might be the only way to keep them from getting on here.

Bruce,

That’s a good idea. I have not thought of something specific like that. Spammers likely would not develop programs for something that precise.

Why? Just add all the subthemes as acceptable answers in the registration process. Should be fairly easy to program, if it isn't already possible to do in phpBB.
