Eww... I already use that UGLY chrome breast plate for an alien faction on another world where the technological level is similar to that of the Medieval Period on Earth.
The minifig armor designs for the Khmers (Cambodia), Malays (Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia) as well as the Siamese (Thailand) factions in my Lego collection, are based off of the movie "THE LEGEND OF SURIYOTHAI" and "KING NARESUAN". Both movies are from Thailand.
Here's the reason why I use brim helmets and gold armors for the 3 Southeast Asian factions.

This gives the warriors from the Southeast Asia region a very unique look compared to the other Asians. East Asia (China, Korea, Japan), Central Asia (Mongols, Turks), Southwest Asia aka Mid-East (Arabs, Persians), and South Asia (India).

I call it ugly because it's just a breastplate as opposed to a full armor that covers both front and back.

I support the idea. Gold Armor would look good for say... Ancient Greeks or something where you can pass off Gold Armor as Bronze Armor.
I actually use my Gold Armor for two of my factions. It looks good on my Persian cavalry as well as my Malayan footsoldiers.

I'm completely indifferent about gold armour. I suppose it suffices for parade armour and the like, but it seems far too sixteenth century to me. The silver is good enough for my purposes.
Heck, I still think that light and dark grey arms and armour are the best. They are simply more versatile than any other colour. I can envision grey as stone, steel, or pretty much any other surface I please. Moreover, I like the fact that dark grey visors match up with dark grey helmets, whereas silver visors look distracting against the pearl grey helmets of the new castle line.
If we don't see more gold breastplates in the future, I don't think I'll lose much sleep.
