No Temple of Doom? Possible Contrary Indications?

The News:
This is incredibly disappointing.

Here is the source. Its about midway down the page, right underneath the battle damaged Vader picture.

Here is the quote:
Additionally, they revealed that their Indy line would not feature The Temple of Doom as it's themes were 'too dark' and the lack of iconic vehicle scenes in the movie restricted their options further.
The Purpose of this Thread in this Forum:

So everyone can express their dismay to Lego, in hopes of them chaging their minds.

My Dismay Expressed:

No Willie or Short Round? I can understand avoiding certain scenes, but to skip the entire movie, is ridiculous. Lots of good scenes could still be made, like the rope bridge fight, Lao Che's plane, mine car chase, elephant ride, Club Obi-Wan, raft ride, etc.

Look at some of the scenes already done from the other movies (not to mention the whole faux-nazi thing):

Lost Tomb: snakes crawling out of a skull's mouth

Truck Chase: pretty explicit running over of a guard

Temple: decaying Forrestal and an impaled Sapito, both of which are included!

I hope they'll reconsider.

Potential Contrary Indications:

IHS: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is noticeably absent from the first LEGO wave that features scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Why is the second film not represented and will we see it in LEGO form in the future?

LEGO: Per our design and production frames, we could only translate a certain number of scenes in our first round of Indiana Jones products, and we chose to focus on those most iconic scenes from the original trilogy, which happen to come from Raiders and Last Crusade. There's no telling what could be in store for future development.

Although I've never seen any of the movies, the way you put it, the sets we have now are more 'dark' than the sets they could make from the lost tomb or whatever it's called. Sets like rope bridge fight and elephant ride sound like they would make lots of money for LEGO. I could really use an elephant/elephants for an army. I hope LEGO will reconsider.

Hey,

Definitely a mine car chase would be a key "iconic vehicle" scene. Rope bridge also seems obvious for a great set. Oh yes, and the monkey brains dinner. :D

The Temple of Doom was my favorite one, I even have fond memories of playing it on a console and an arcade game. It stinks if this decision is final.

Maybe we'd get monkey's with removable heads?

I wonder how they are going to do the Indiana Jones Lego Video game, if they aren't going to do the Temple Of Doom.

Oh thank god! I always thought it was the weakest movie of the three, and re-watching them recently confirmed it with newfound enthusiasm.

The honest truth is that I'd probably buy the sets anyway if they made them, since I'm sure they'd be worth buying and all. Sort of like how I buy all the new trilogy Star Wars sets, even though I think the new movies were awful. I'll just secretly gloat to myself that Lego agreed with my distaste of Temple of Doom :)

When ever I think of Indy, that mine car chase is the first thing that comes to mind!

Also, the 'airplane to falling raft' scene was another amazing action sequence in the movie.
The Temple of Doom was my favorite one,
Same here.
Let's hope they change their mind on this!

That's unfortunate, that movie is also my favorite. Indy just wouldn't be the same without that particular adventure. The bridge scene as Athos mentioned would make for an excellent set. I guess we'll just have to hope that the decision is not final.

The Temple of Doom is in my opinion the weakest and darkest of the Indy films to date. I can see why Lego took a pass on it. This being said however, last month I dropped it into the DVD player because my elder son (age 6) wanted to see it. I was planning on just showing them the Club Obi-Wan scene, which led to them seeing the plane/raft scene, then I skipped ahead to the Willie/elephant/jungle animals scene.

And before you know it we're all watching monkey brains being devoured. I did skip the human sacrifice scene and Indy being drugged, but pretty much they saw the rest of the movie from the point where Short Round torches zombie Jones.

Yes it was fairly stupid movie at times and certainly the human sacrifice scene was highly innapropiate for young children to see. But the rest of the film the boys really liked. I'd argue that the they like it because it was a stupider movie. They are just little kids and little kids like being grossed out by disgusting food and the more cartoony action scenes were perfectly legitimate fight scenes for kids who watch cartoons.

So Lego may want to rethink its take on The Temple of Doom. My boys probably liked it more than the other two films on the whole, and they are the target market for Lego.

While Temple of Doom is not my favorite Indy film, I think it was still quite enjoyable. In fact, I just watched it the other night for the first time in years on a whim. I found myself laughing a lot through; it's almost as funny as Crusade. That said, I can see how LEGO would have a hard time translating some scenes into sets. I'm not sure how many kids would want a Chinese plane, but if it included a raft, that may increase play value. A mine car chase would be a definite no-brainer, though, and when I first heard of the official announced sets, I just assumed that such a set would eventually be released.

I think Lego is passing on a film that could sell a few sets.

If they only wanted iconic vehicle chases, there are two good ones. One, the mine cart. You have a backdrop made of various bricks and a track for the cart to move across. Give just a straight track, then we would have to buy extra tracks to make an oval or longer scene.

Jumping out the the plane in a raft. There have been a few sets where a smaller water craft would shoot out of the back of a larger set (the Batboat, Police Hydrocraft, one of the spider-man sets). Lego makes a plane and uses the already developed system of rubber bands to launch a raft out the back. Lego already has a raft mold.

Then elephants. Not sure what kind of set to make to have an elephant. Guess you could just re-release the elephant set from the Orient Expedition line, replace the car with something else and sub in Indie minifigs. Now this could be a popular set. When my best bud came out of his dark ages, bought a house and set-up a Lego room, he wanted to buy more elephants. Unfortunately, his timing was off. The Orient Expedition line was discontinued and he was only able to pick-up the two sets with elephants before they were gone.

Why don't we just make our own mine chases and rope bridges? Thats the fun of LEGO!

Maybe they can fire whoever at LEGO said Temple of Doom was not possible. I thought people who work for LEGO were supposed to have imaginations? :P Ties, they restrict oxygen to the brain. Temple of Doom would have some of the best set options, certainly better than the Crystal Skulls stuff they barely pulled together out of old Adventurer set designs.

I count this official report Lame.

We'll probably get a really big and expensive Indy chess set encompasing all films, but thoughtfully skipping over Temple of Doom then, hmmm???
