Small and Medium modular fortifications

Post by Heir of Black Falcon »

I was just thinking about how the last few years we have gotten a nice new castle, following in a tradition of the classic castles and being able to be joined with other fortifications. Perhaps it would be nice to continue another old classic tradition and have some small to medium fortifications like these from the past to connect with it.

I own many of the new 2007 and 2008 sets but do not own the new Tower Raid but from what I can tell it lacks the connection parts to join it to the castle. I'd love to see some walls in particular but tower modular sets as well for castle fortifications.

When I was younger ten or there about I bought 4 of the knight's strongholds set. I made a few tall towers and some small modifications and used it as my main baddies castle for a while. The amount of variation in these sets lends themselves to all sorts of interesting possibilities and creating much larger castles and town walls is nice as well. I eventually merged two of the knight's strongholds to the dungeon masters castle as an outer defence and used the other two as a smaller fortress.

I can see gate houses, towers, wall sections all of types smaller structures as being a nice addition to the many exisiting castles and such made. I think for official Lego sets they could be very useful. In part as they can be used together and taken apart with ease as well as it almost encourages one to buy multiples of the smaller and medium fortifications so as to make bigger walls and towers etc. Just wanted to see what others thought of this idea. It could easily be used for building non-military structures as has been seen in the new town structures.

We have some awesome siege engines.... we need something fun to shoot at!

The castle structures should be modular. You can snap in wall sections from 7029 Skeleton's Ship Attack. I also do not own the Tower Raid set yet. But from the photos on shop at home, it does look to be missing technic bricks so that it could be snapped into the castle.

One major flaw of the King's Castle Siege is that it is missing hinged wall sections. While you can add other wall sections, the castle can only be a rectangle. Plus you have to add the same amount of new wall on both sides of the castle to make it larger and still connect. Hopefully when ever a new good guy knight castle is designed, these things will be taken into account. Another option would be to offer hinged wall siege sets that are similar to:

As i mentioned before, hinges on the big castle would also eliminate the stated need for 'airy towers' that being to display the play features on a box photo.

More modular sections for 7094 would be great as would another large modular castle with swapable bits.

I also think the med/small units could be designed in such a way as to make a large castle that way, so you could market them like the old constructicons.

This latter would be neat for a troll fort, give it the look of a siege fortification?

Timber wolf,

Funny you bring that up. I have finished a rough version of my orc city. It was build on the concepts of the Viking fortress and the knights stronghold. I wanted the ability to use the sections independently or combine them. I am waiting for a few more pieces to keep it going. The main gate/citadel ended up much bigger than I wanted but to get the single piece portcullis to work it had to be about one whole level taller.

It seems like we have just hit a glut as far as fortifications that were smaller and I think this might be a good in between method to get both young collectors and AFOLs interested. Also makes it possible to add in your own MOC sections to them with ease.

Thanks for the ideas and comments! The hinge piece is very key to this as well. The connections on the viking fortress would be another good way to do this as well. I think a more rough and evil looking set like the viking fortress would be nice for the troll base or even a smalelr one as an outpost perhaps?
