Napoleon wrote:@Ottoatm: Woah, last I checked, there are many more Christians than Hindus. Also, he might be refering to every denomination, and not just Catholic. I, as a Baptist, still take offense if they make Hindu/Bhuddist/Islamic temples/churches, and yet have not made a Medieval Catholic church. Fine, leave the crosses out, but please, LEGO, make a monastary.
When ottoatm said there are more "hindus, muslims, etc" he probably referred to the fact that there are a lot more non-Christians than Christians in the world (as if Christian would mean one thing only for that matter....).

I for one find the whole idea of getting offended at a set of any kind of religious building quite alien but I do agree with those who think a monastery without symbols would work best. I would love to see a monastery or convent anyway, then again, as pointed out, I could build one myself just as fine.

As for the topic at hand, what I'd think this gap (what gap by the way?) needs to be filled with... I can think of a lot of things but to be realistic it'd probably have to be quite fancy and violent, so why not something truly different in that way? Floating castles and airships? An "evil" faction of human (perhaps allied with trolls or what-not) sky-pirates facing some avian kind of people with wings for arms or so.

Lets see...to call some of these religions is stretching it, but I am just writing these examples on the spur of the moment.

IJ Temple Escape: Native American religion, even has a golden idol as one of the pieces.

Quite a few Johnny Thunder sets were temples: Native American religions, and I think at least one that was Islamicesque.

IJ Temple of the Crystal Skull...really hokey, but still a religion.

Ninja: many Bhuddist-like sets.

Pirate sets featured a lot of Pacific Islander religion stuff.

Castle: None. Not one church! At least the Catholic monks didn't eat people like the Pacific Islanders did!

I think you are stretching more than a little bit for a lot of those. Seriously now, building something in the "style" of a movie or a fake design that looks like an Mayan temple is NOT a direct reflection of a religion.

CCCVII this year had MANY fine examples of churches. There are many fine cathedrals around brickshelf and flickr. You want a church...BUILD ONE.

Did any of you ever wonder that maybe, just maybe it would not make a lot of economical sense to go about creating sets based on a given religion? They risk offending any number of people by creating them. Offending potential customers is never a good thing in business.

You have a point, Blue, but how are we supposed to build one, when many of us lack the right pieces? :( Stainglass windows are hard to make, and are very expensive to get the right pieces. Monk figs are hard to make, unless you can copy decals on sticker paper, which I can't. I don't have the money to buy that special kind of printer or the paper. I have looked in stores, and I haven't even seen sticker paper. :( Odds are, it dosen't seem like a big deal to you, because you have more bricks and/or more money to buy more. I and many other members are relatively poor compared to popular online builders such as you. If I took your suggestion, I would be telling everyone here: "Why do you want LEGO to make a castle set? BUILD ONE YOURSELF. Which is not very helpful if you don't have tons of arches, doors, grey bricks. Sorry if I sound like I am ranting or being a smarty pants, I am not trying to be, I just wanted to show what we mean when we want a LEGO church. Edit: I looked at your creations, :woo: and I can tell you have more money than I do.

You have an invalid argument. Build with what you have. There are plenty of small churches all over brickshelf. Take this for example. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=389679 Here is a search. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/searc ... type=f&n=6

Whining about a lack of money and begging for a set that WILL be expensive are completely in contradiction of each other.

Bricklink exists. Ebay exists. Many people get very good deals at garage sales and thrift stores. Arches are not THAT expensive. Make due with what you have.

And your statement about me and grey..couldn't be more wrong also. I only have a very small collection of grey.

I am not whining, I am only showing all sides of the issue. I didn't say that you had a massive collection of grey, just a larger collection of any color that I have. I would rather pay one lump sum, than go poring over E-bay for a bunch of tiny pieces, and then have to pay shipping on top of that. The price would be horrible, even to some one who has a lot of money. Also, sometimes you can't trust online sellers, and most of the things in thrift stores have to be cleaned, and it is hard to clean LEGO.(I found that out :( ) I do keep an eye out for garage sales, though. And even then, I would always like to have instructions for the first monastary that I would build, you know, kinda like a kick-start.

P.S. Even the church in the first link is well-beyond my collection.

Ottotam: True, but I doubt followers of Islam appreciate the Hindu based temple in adventurers, seeing as there aren't any mosques either. I also think that your almighty dollar/euro/pound/peso theory is a good one. I would like to clarify that when I made the second half of my argument I was a biased party  .

Napolean: True, but many nations are more anti American than anti Christian. To look upon a famous disaster, it was the pentagon, the whitehouse, and the world trade center that were targetted in the 9/11 attacks. I don't recall St. Peters Bassillica or Westminster Abbey being an attack target, the target was the U.S., meaning right now that flag is more controvercial than the Cross. Still a double standard, only having thought about it more the stick is even shorter :)

Bluesecrets: Well of course i can build one, why wouldn't I be able to build one, why is the world so cruel  !

Just kiddin', I started one as a longterm WIP. If you would like to see it so far here's the link;

I just think it would be fun to get some new figures, maybe some more book pieces, any new elements they decide to throw in, plus more of the basic parts from lego. I also think that, were they to do a monestairy, it wouldn't be a large set. It would probably be about $50 knowing lego, and would have an airy design comprable to the towers on kings castle siege. My main reason for wanting one, to be honest, would be for new figs/parts and just to see how the company would make one. Respectfully disagreeing,

Elbadar

You want some monks for your monastary? Use those brown Chewbacca bodies, pop in some yellow hands, and place any of the KK2 Knights heads on top. Almost all of them had hair circles printed around the stud. Perfect! Chances are that most of the material you might want for building anything from LEGO is currently available from one of the individual brick seller websites, and pretty cheap too compared to official set prices. All you have to do is plan things out and test drive your imagination a bit.

The dialogue we've been having in this thread pretty much makes it very clear as to why a religious theme or set probably won't be in the cards; it's far too political. LEGO really doesn't need that kind of negative attention. Even this thread has started to become a bit too political for my tastes.

This thread has been fairly civil to this point. Almost everything has been said. I am locking this thread to prevent future off topic discussions. Thanks.
