Little difference between new and old Light grey

Post by SavaTheAggie »

Begin Rant

........... yeah..... right.....

HAH! I laugh at your color blindness, comrade!

There's been a lot of people complaining about the complaining about the color change, mainly on Lugnet, but elsewhere on FBTB and to here, saying that while there's a big difference between new and old dark grey, but little noticable difference betwen the new and old light grey.

Well I challenge all of you to look at

this picture

And then say with a straight face there's little noticable difference between the new and old light grey.

End Rant

May just be the lighting in the picture, or maybe the way it is showing up on my laptop screen but I don't see much difference. I do notice it in person, but I think it is a change I can live with.

Just for clarification purposes, the new light and dark grey in the picture is the harry potter griffon only.

Ok, well I can kind of see it on the front one. But one the one halfway inside I don't notice it that much. But I can tell a difference.

Of course there is also a noticeable variation between most of the old light grays in the structure and two 1x4's in the upper tower. I see a fair amount of variation when I look at light grays bought last year (before the "new gray" took hold) and bricks that are from my original classic space sets in the late 70s. Of course, I can't promise that I didn't leave my bricks out in the sun and rain when I was 8.

Woah, when I first looked at the picture, I saw light grey castle with dark grey trim (both original colours), and two white griffons with new dark grey wings.

If the person who took the picture could include some white bricks in the pic, that would be helpful...

I've noticed the same, with old grey, I've noticed it for years. It's also quite pronounced with white (new or old, I can't tell the difference :D) The other colours seem to weather light and usage better, colourwise.

I thought there was a general consensus that the different grays are very obvious when they are next to each other.

The only argument was that some people say a creation made from the the new light grey will look terrible compared to the same thing built from old light grey. That incorrect argument is often countered by something like, "old and new light grey are so similar that using one or the other will not ruin the appearance of an MOC."

That is not talking about mixing them. If you mix them together, the difference is very obvious. If you use one or the other, it doesn't really matter as long as they are all the same.

I care and now that I have a some of the new light gray in hand, I care even more. As others have stated if you keep it to itself the new gray looks kind of ok, but mixed in with old, it looks wrong. Yes old gray had varied color, yes it yellowed, but it was a warm color and the variations in color looked all right. The new light gray color is a cold gray and it does not add well or look like a complimentary variation.

My 50+ bags of the old light gray offering do not appear to have very much variance either so who knows where all the variance in new old light gray bricks comes from... Old dark gray was always a much more varied offering color-wise, but I'd still take it over the new megabloks dark gray they are offering now.

After a long absence, I have returned. I can't wait to start building again.

I care too. Its just that there isn't anything we can do about it, and I've complained about it enough. Guess I'm just resigned to it, and am trying to start getting used to it, and getting along with it. Such is life, I guess.
