Buried under a pile of Lego.
I was looking at the thread about finding that one piece in a tub and then having it disappear under and avalanche of parts. This reminded me of my current situation.
My livingroom is currently full of about 2/3 of my Lego, I started off organizing the easy stuff a few months ago, but I became lazy and put most of it away again for another day.
That day has turned into the last 3 days and I will likely not be finished for at least a week. Job/family take up some time, but in all I figure it will take me about 120 hours to sort everything. It sounds like a lot of time, but keep in mind my collection has about 2 - 3 million pieces and has not been organized properly ever.
I am about 20% sorted now and all the major part types now have a tub or tray to reside in. By Monday I should be finished sorting all the loose pieces and some of the old MOCs. That should leave me with the difficult part...
I have two giant tubs of built castles full of interior details, figs and accessories that were destroyed during my move. Those tubs are 3' long, 1.5' tall and 1.5' wide and full to the top with castles in shambles. I am leaving them to last as taking apart a castle with a 128 x 128 footprint will take a long time. I also have 3 other large sized castles and numerous other small MOCs that were not salvageable after my move.
A bit of advice for people just starting out with your collections, organize early and keep it up. Or one day you could have your livingroom buried under a pile of Lego.
Creativity can be stifled with a growing mess you know you need to sort. As my signature states, moving sucks and I am a lazy man!
It will be a pain getting this all done, but in the end I will be able to start producing MOCs again. I have so many ideas gathered from all the great builders here that I can't wait to start bringing some of my own creations to life.
My folks borrowed my camera for the weekend, but I will be posting pics of my sorting results when my camera returns.

After a long absence, I have returned. I can't wait to start building again.

Being a little older, means also having some more Lego. And I can tell that Lego organization is, and always will be a lifelong struggle.

It took me a week to organize my lego.....
And my collection is piddly next to some of you old geezers.
Fortunately, anything new either gets sorted or turned into a MOC. Or both. So unless I decide to completely overhaul the system I've got, I should never have to worry about sorting too much again.
I hope.

I agree - it can be a real pain organizing. As for me, I have my stuff under control - just barely. Having two younger siblings - ages 10 and 6 can really do alot in a short span of time The trick is making your organization system "balanced". Even if I didn't have a brother and sister, I still would be on the edge simply because of the Lego that I must put back after each project. If you have - let's say - 120 different compartments and you really get involved in your projects, it can be something awful to put everything back again. My system uses 54 different drawers, and it has been working pretty well.

I wish you the best of luck wlistler - I am looking forward to any new MOCs you put up.

If you were older, I might have considered it, but no matter how cool or honest I am, no parent in their right mind would let their child hang out with a grown up they met on the Internet. Besides I don't think you are prepared for the extent of the mess.Robin Hood wrote:I only live an hours drive away. I could help and the price would be oh a few choice pieces of your lego. Hehe.
If you want to see my collection close up, Attend Supertrain this Winter here in Calgary. I will be about 1/4 of the entire Lego layout this year.
As it is I may invite Old_Republic over to give me a hand with this mess this week. He's not a grown up, but he is old, just like me.
