Collectible Figs series 8 revealed

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

Official pics have come out of Series 8, reportedly coming out in September.

I'm most excited about the Shaskespeare and Conquistador figs, but there are several other nice ones as well.

Thank god these are mostly useless (except Hamlet and The Conquistador)... this saves me a lot of money.

I really don't understand this collection, another robot, another cheerleader, an over the top cowgirl (for the cowboy/bandit?) - instead of introducing some really new figs (like the pirate) they warm up old ideas.

That ruff... that RUFF! All my renaissance-esque MOC ideas will be truly enhanced with that ruff! Not to mention the conquistador too!

8 out of 16 I'd want. Kind of dissappointed in LEGO for making YET ANOTHER robot that looks exactly like the robot in series 1 except with a gun. And of course, cheerleader, hockey player, alien (recolored Alien Quest? Really, LEGO?), and skier are rather boring. The diver is to die for though.

Woohoo! These look great!

Shakespeare I will definitely need a few of, as well as a lederhosen boy, a fairy, and at least a few bat-men. The conquistador might be useful as well, particularly for the armor, though I doubt it's actually chromed.

Also, I'm not much for customization, but seeing as how the football player is already sporting Aaron Rodgers' #12, I might have to get one and switch him to green and gold :eyebrows:

The alien torso/skirt/cape might even work as an evil queen, once you switch the head out, of course.

I'll be wanting the conquistador, Shakespearean fellow, and the Lederhosen dude. I might have to make an Oktoberfest scene!

I'm not surprised to see some repeats. It's beneficial to LEGO to have some character types come out every couple years or so. Also, having cheerleaders with a different uniform allows setting up two teams (or with more, you could do a cheerleading competition).

Here are the preliminary names I am assigning these figures in order to update the Wishlist:

Alien Overlord
Antique Diver
Conquistador
Cowgirl
Deejay
Evil Robot
Fairy
Female Skier
Football Hero
Man-Bat
Oktoberfest Man
Pirate Captain
Red Cheerleader
Renaissance Man
Santa Claus
Victorian Gentleman

Does this look okay? Have I misinterpreted any of them?

I was really looking forward to the fairy, but the wings are the only part I like on that one. Would like to see those wings in trans purple and trans green someday.

I still like a lot of the figures. Bavarian boy, conquistador, diver, ruffled collar theater guy, alien, pirate, and bat man. Most of the others still have parts I'll use. Faces, hair, lasso, etc. There's nothing I want in massive quantities though, but that is a bit of a relief.

I'd say the victorian is actually just a standard businessman, and renaissance man probably better as Shakespearean actor/hamlet although unlikely to be its official name (renaissance man has a different modern meaning). Oktoberfest is all about beer so I think Bavarian is better, though he's obviously not a boy as he has a moustache (would have been cool to have perhaps a printed pair of short legs). I think the alien is female (not saying females can't be overlords... Overlady?...:p) so maybe alien queen?

Over all I think this series is pretty weak... Or maybe I'm just getting CMF fatigue... There's some nice pieces, but not nearly as many new parts as previous series (I count 10?) which is my main interest in getting them.

I still see boxes of series 6 and 7 (and the occassional over-priced 5), and although I said this before (for series 7) I wouldn't be surprised if shops start cutting back on their orders so they don't end up with shelf loads of previous series unsold (unless they're under contract?).

At least I don't need to buy a monster fighters set to take a look at those man-bats now though.
Less talking, more MOCing.

Thanks for the suggestions, andhe! Here is my revised list:

Alien Leader
Antique Diver
Bavarian
Businessman
Conquistador
Cowgirl
Deejay
Evil Robot
Fairy
Female Skier
Football Hero
Man-Bat
Pirate Captain
Red Cheerleader
Renaissance Actor
Santa Claus

I think the reason for the repetition is that the design team has a few standard scenarios that they try to add to with every series. One of them is obviously a space battle/alien invasion, so we get several different space heroes and several different aliens over time.

Doubt I will buy any of these, although I will probably bricklink some of the parts. I wonder about the LEGO business end of these collectibles: 8 sets peoduced in a relatively short time, with quite a few minifigs overlapping (as other commenters have observed). Speaking for myself, I would much rather see them do more Star Wars or Castle or Ninjago, etc battle packs than collections like these.

I happen to be thrilled about this series. Yes there are repeats but quite frankly, if one is going to try and make a moc of a sport, you need two different teams. As far as the alien, quite frankly the Alien Quest line happened at a time when I had other LEGO priorities, so I"m good with those existing. Now, here is the thing, the kids I know LOVE every single fig they see. My nephews are so excited to get new aliens, robots and space guys. Sure they won't want the fairy, but hey I want an army of them. I am a HUGE football fan, so getting a football guy thrills me to no end. As far as I see, there isn't one fig that I don't like. Parts are parts. Maybe I don't need yet another skiier, but that wig and head and even the torso are great.

I guess it all comes down to this: we are getting figs that we'd never get a line for, we are getting great parts, what is not to like? Parts are parts.

Easily the weakest offering of the Collectible Minifig Series. The best part about the series is that it seems like it will be easier to feel for specific parts to identify which figure you are getting.

Definitely the worst so far- far too many palette swaps. Hoping to Bricklink a few of them and stop there- the first wave i've no interest in completing.
