Old Bricks

Post by Emperor James »

I just received a lego lot I got on ebay. I will post stuff about that in buy sell trade soon. Anyway, in this lot I got a few red bricks that said "LEGO" on the studs in a slightly different font, and looked to be a brighter and slightly translucent shade of red. I will mention that I foud three Yellow castle visors and a few yellow two figures from that time period so that you know that some of these pieces may be very old. My question is, were the bricks from a long time ago like this, and if so, are they at all valuable?

I, too, had some of these types of bricks a while ago. I'm not an expert, but I think someone said they are not made out of ABS, and so were the first types of bricks used by the LEGO Co.

I think there might be more info at this website, but I'm not sure (I really need to organize my bookmarks):

I've done some asking about at LUGNET, but so far it seems these kind of bricks are no worth anything, even though they are old. Maybe because they're only plain bricks and not special accessories.

Anyway, I decided to throw mine out along with the clone-brand pieces I fished out because they are warped and a slightly translucent color, so they are pretty useless.

...of course now someone's gonna tell me I shoulda save 'em...I just know it...

Should have saved them yes... I believe them to be the Italian (MiniItalia) counterpart we've seen sporadic mentioning before. I kept all the ones I've aquired over the past few years, in red and white some are even yellow. The studs are very different as well as the tubes underneath. I may be wrong on the Italia thing but we never know till someone has the real deal to compare with.

Those are probably Cellulose Acetate (CA) bricks made by TLC in Denmark up until the early 60s, and I believe they were still producing bricks from that material in the United States up until the late 60s or early 70s.

They aren't very good bricks though. Their colors are a bit odd looking and they warp with age. I have a few of them as well. I also have some ABS bricks with a couple different LEGO logos on the studs.

To the best of my knowledge, any brick with a different LEGO logo is older than 1980 because all parts I have seen from the 80s and forward use the same LEGO logo.
