Question for the masses
Question for the masses
Back story:
To keep it short, I got my other half interested in Lego when we first met. It helps she has a 4 year old and that kid loves lego even though he is only four. Really makes things easier for me
She found an ad on the Used Victoria website about a 12 year old kid selling his Lego.... by the pound and he has tons. Two rooms full of it. However, because that kid is moving (parents are moving) he is selling his Lego. She brought some but there are non-Lego parts in there as well ( Mega-blocks and Cobi). I managed to get the obvious non-Lego set aside BUT I can't tell on some of the pieces if they are Lego or not.
So the question is:
How can you tell which is which? Is there a method you use that is a fool proof way to tell if the pieces are non-Lego?

Re: Question for the masses
Most bricks say LEGO, of course, but some smaller things don't. Can you post a close-up photo of the questionable parts? I'm sure we can help spot the clones.

Re: Question for the masses
Well my answer to this is ask your LEGO buddies in real life. If you are in VICLUG, I know of one who can tell just by looking and without much effort at all. Not all are marked and some...well the marking is so tiny that you may not find it.How can you tell which is which? Is there a method you use that is a fool proof way to tell if the pieces are non-Lego?
And when in doubt, check bricklink, brickset, peeron..etc.

Re: Question for the masses
Or how about doing something actually good with them and donate them to the needy. No need to destroy when good can be done with them.Once you've found all of them, make a pile of all them and set it ON FIRE !!!!!
Re: Question for the masses
I am not in VicLUG, mostly because im way too busy to do anything with them. Chef Life problems. Megablocks, I don't even have time to build stuff. I will post the pictures when I have time to sort through all the stuff. thanks for the input folks
Re: Question for the masses

Dude! No worries. We don't require attendance.RoyT wrote:I am not in VicLUG, mostly because im way too busy to do anything with them. Chef Life problems.
Maybe coffee sometime?
When sorting that kind of mixed bag off UsedVic I often have Bricklink open to check funny-looking parts. Or I used to.
After a while you can feel the difference in plastic although my first clue is often colour.
My brain flow works like this when sorting this stuff:
- Is it a LEGO colour?
- Does it feel like LEGO ABS?
- Can I find "LEGO" on the part? - note all but the very smallest or awkwardly-shaped parts (ie flex tube) have this on the part somewhere
- Can I find it on BrickLink?

Re: Question for the masses
No you dont have to go to all the lug meetings. I am a member of CowLug in colorado but as a chef my self, life is crazy! Currently I work the swing shift an I hate it! Start at 10am finish around 7pm. Cant start anything before work cause if you do you dont want to stop. Cant start after work, cause have to cook when you get home, and get the wife ready for work (works grave yard shift) after you get her out the door have to lay down the kid. By the time your done its already 10pm! And your so beat as soon as you sit down you check email etc and read a bit your in bed and up with the kid at the crack of dawn!
I build and sort when I can. I also donate any misc brick that isnt lego. The advice above is great. So join up with viclug an go an participate when you can.

Re: Question for the masses
It's the plastic Lego is made from, and its high quality makes Lego superior to clone brands.RoyT wrote:What is Lego ABS?
