To many Minifigs?

Post by forester3291 »

Is there such a thing as too many minifigs?

I have about 25-30 castle minifigs. This includes the stickered ones, the peasants....all of them. I'm not really content with my castle collection but I deall with it most of the time.

But in This Thread[
Bruce showed a link. This guy has tons of castle figs. So does Will and some other Castle heads here. So this brought a queastion to my mind. Is there such a thing as too much minifigs.

You see, for me there is. I think 25 of each faction and I would be content. I would rather have tons of 2,000 bricks then 3,000 castle Knights and figs anyday.

I know some of you enjoy having tons of figs to dwarf others' collections, and I say to each man his own. If you want tons and tons of figs I'm not going to haate you for it.

See, I think once I get 25 of each faction(When I'm old and gray most likely) I would want 50 of each faction, then 100 and so on. Now I'm not saying that Will, Jpinoy, and all the other minifigopolis owners should stop collecting. It's cool to see thousands of minifigs lined up and ready for battle. I'm just asking for your opinion.

Mine is Yes. There are such a thing as too many minifigs. But I think it is up to each LEGO maniac to decide what is right for him or her. I think it's wahtever you and I am content with. If Will is content with his 1,000s of men then I congratualte him. If I'm content with my 25 men then I congratualte myself.

So just post your comments. I'm not going to have a poll. I want to see what You have to say. Not a bunch of percentage signs and numbers.
Space rocks.

My problem is not having enough minifigs. Each set I collect I usually only get once, so I generally don't get a large number of the minifigs. This means I get a variety of minifig factions, but for some I might only have about six people to make up an 'army'. Buying sets to increase my faction numbers would be too expensive.
I would like to expand upon my LEGO armies, but I do think there is a limit. I'd be content with 25 up to 50 for a faction army, but any minifigs beyond that and I'd probably be going too far.

Im hoping that lego will one day sale mini-figs in bulk (of the same type)
I have about 50 or 60 castle figs but they are all different types.

Gosh I wish I had my own lego factory!

It all depends on what you are doing with the figs. I suppose if you just like lining up row upon row of figures, then that is sufficient reason in and of itself. If you just want to populate a small village, then you don't need tons. I like gaming with the figs, so I have a fair amount, but you can get by with a fairly small amount if you are doing skirmish gaming rather than full battlefield formed units. People just need to feel comfortable if what they have is sufficient to their needs. There's no need to compete. If 25-50 is all you need to populate your creations, than that is fine.

I think I have around 25 figs per faction nowdays... and it's more than enough for me... I have even more crusaders because I accidentally bought two King's Castles (Long story) and it's hard to keep them all in order and what not...

I'd say that if your not careful, you can focus too much on the figs and not the bricks, and at that point, you need to decide exactly what you want to do with lego... build an army, a castle... or both(everyone's dream)!!

Wow, to have 1000s of minifigs sounds cool!

I grew up playing with a very limited and mixed selection of figs, maybe ten figs at the most from my biggest faction (DM), then, last year, I won a lot on an lego auction and got about 30 figs (BF and crusaders) it was a great day (since I might have owned like two BFs before) I do not think you can have to many figs (I meen you get to decide for your self how many you want, right?) Other people on the other hand might have something to say.

(Like the parents that do not want to buy Lego for their 19 year old son for christmas :cry: :wink: )

As one of the people mentioned in this topic, I thought I risk the keystroke program at work to respond to this. No I still don't have access from home. At least until after X-Mas. :D

A large portion of my figs was obtained in my youth. I didn't collect figs specifically and haven't really for quite some time. Now accessories for figs, that is another story. :wink:

I don't really think you can have too many figs, but diversity is important. I have seen the massive Black Falcon army post and even though it looked impressive, I wouldn't want an army like that. 80% of my armies are not standard issue figs, I swap out heads, arms, legs, capes, armor and accessories to make as many figs in each faction unique.

I like the "wow" factor you get from a large army, but a small army with a lot of diversity is far more fun. That has been my focus over the last few years anyway.

If I was just starting out, I would probably be happy with 25 - 50 figs per faction. I have certainly added more brick to my collection over the last few years than I have figs. You need a good ratio of bricks to figs in order to have places to keep them all. A stable for 100 horses needs a lot of brick. :wink:

Happy Holidays!

Well, I have somewhere in excess of 200 Castle-oriented figs. I wouldn't say that I'm exactly content.

Ideally, I would like to round out my good-guy armies, and be able to make a few more non-military types, which would probably mean a total good guy count of about 200.

I like my baddie to goodie ratio to be suitably suicidal, so I'd need to up those numbers to 1000-2000.

However, I am content with what I have at the moment, and certain contraints like time, money, space, actual amounts of usage come into play.

Still, I DO think that there is a point at which I would feel done. And that number would appear to be around 2000.

EDIT: I also feel it important to note that these numbers would only be giving about 5-10 people to each good-guy sub-faction. The reason I would need so many is the abundance of subfactions I have kicking around...

My goal is to have a minimum of 100 soldiers per faction. I have 28 such factions with some "super-factions" being large enough to be divided into sub-factions.

Groups separated into subfactions:
Kahilawayans = 3
-Kaharian ng Kahilawayan (Kahilawayan Empire)
-Bagonglupang (New Homeland)
-Mangatiwala (The Believers)
Greeks = 2
-Mycenae
-Thrace
Celts = 2
-Belgae
-Galli
India = 4
-Harappa
-Varanasi
-Radjhani
-Punjab
China = 4
-Xi'an
-Chengtoushan
-Rizhao
-Lingjiatan

Other groups like the Egyptians are just plain large and need not be divided into smaller groupings.

This is an interesting question. While I'm not sure that any lego fan can have too many minifigs, I do believe That an overly large collection of minifigs can become quite boring.

Large numbers of similarly dressed figures do not really excite me. I often wish that persons who chose to collect these large armies would add more variety to their ranks. It seems almost silly to see 100+ mounted knights displaying the same heraldry on their shields.

As for me, I only have about 500 castle minifigs, however I rarely make use of them all. Without an appropriate MOC, most of my figures end up rotting away in a plastic bucket. I appreciate that some gamers may utilize a large number of figures for their games, but for display, a large fortification or village blows a large collection of figs out of the water any day of the week.

It certainly depends on your purpose. My main thing is photographing scenes for illustrated stories. As such, I have found that a huge number of figs isn't necessary. Yes, it would be cool to have a couple of photos showing a full-sized battle on the Pelannor Fields with 100s of figs in each faction, but I find it is just as effective to have close-up shots with only a few figs. Shoot, Brickshelf seems to be down or I would give examples, but I find that the huge photos just seem to be busy and hard to see the details. As such, my largest faction has like 25 or so.

If, however, I was doing fig-based gaming or setting up a battlefield diorama for display, I would want a lot more figs.

Hello!

I once experienced having "too many" minifigs. When I built my Castle Falckenstein I needed only 20-30 Black Falcons to man it. But I had about 130 Black Falcons at that time, so nearly 100 figs were redundant.

I agree with you that 2000 bricks are more useful than 3000 figs. However, you younger guys should not despair on your small amount of figs. The greater amounts come with the time, you will be getting more and more sets over the years, and every set comes with figs.

Right now I think I have about 40 castle figs (Forestmen, Black Falcons, etc) and 60 figs that could be used for castle (Jedi, etc), plus 40 figs that are completely useless unless I resorted to stickers (Harry Potter clones, etc). I dearly long for more castle figs, I but do think I would be content with about 2000 total, including fantasy figs like orcs and common folk like peasents. At the moment I am in the process of making a custom 'barbarian' army. I have 20 minifigs so far, but I want to at least triple that number. I also agree with what someone stated above that too many figs that look all the same get boring, so my army is going to have 20 pikemen, 20 swordsmen, 20 archers, etc, that really look different from one another, not just with a different weapon. I have no desire to have great amounts of official factions (except, perhaps, the Forestmen, Dark Foresters and Wolfpack), but I do want a ton of custom factions with the average size of 20 figs, though I think you can never have enough peasents.

All in all, yes, I think there can be too many figs, but only in certain situations, and it will be a long time before I'm in one of those situtions! :wink:
