What is everyone's opinion about modification of Lego bricks to expand their functionality? I have some ideas that could be amazing for my next castle, but it would require me to modify some bricks. Is it wrong to modify bricks? Or is it a creative way to make even more things possible? It would really help me make my next creation much more realistic. Please let me know what you think because I want to get started building!

in what way are you modifiing it?
as it cutting it down and chopping it into pieces?

I've never tried it but if the brick wich I create is very handy then I say way not

That's called customizing and we have a whole forum devoted to it. Some people are fine with it and some people aren't.

Although I'm totally into minifig customization, I don't really care for the modification of bricks myself.

There are so many different bricks out there to choose from, you can almost always pull off a good, "purist" build with an extra bit of creative thinking. Not something I can say I'm all that good at personally, but I've seen a lot of other builders come up with some amazing techniques! You might want to check around Brickshelf or somewhere to see if anybody else has ever done what you are trying to do before to get some ideas.

But hey, that's certainly not to say you shouldn't, or can't modify your bricks. They're yours afterall, right?

I completely agree with Lamanda. If there is absolutely no way of pulling off what you need to do with Lego bricks, then hey, what are you gonna do? In the end its your decision (pure or unpure). If you are fine with it then it shouldn't be a problem, but I am a "purist" builder so IMO I would take a different route and try what Lamanda suggested.

Ah, the age old debate; to cut or not to cut?

I have cut lots of pieces over the years. Often times years later Lego came up with the new part, or something close. But I never looked back. I say go for it, then show us the results!

I appreciate everyone's input. I definitely would prefer to do it without cutting bricks, and I have seen what others have done, and have ideas of my own. However, I do not like the end result as much with the pure Lego bricks. I cut some bricks the other day as a test run, and the result looks awesome. I just wish I could get it without cutting bricks! I'm still debating which route to take. It's hard to decide what is more important to me, a pure built creation, or one that looks much more realistic but I had to literally cut corners to get there. This is for a huge castle I'm building, so once I decide it will impact my whole next year of my life and the greatest creation I've ever built. Will the modification of these bricks taint the Lego world's view of my creation? I guess that's the question weighing on my mind.
