Sail Dimensions?
Sail Dimensions?
Hello all,
I am currently working on creating a custom sail for a customer, and have been thinking about adding sails to my shop, since it seems to be a fairly common question I have received from others.
Trouble is, I don't own any sails myself, so I don't have much to go by when it comes to creating a template to use. For starters, I was going to create this style, since Bricklink offers a clear enough image to make a basic template, though this style takes priority, since it's what I need to complete this order. Does anybody here know the dimensions of the sail(s) in something like inches or centimeters?
Also, does anybody else have different scans of these or the other shapes of sails? Over at Bricklink, they all seem to be photographs rather than scans, so it would be difficult to create an accurate template from them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
~Amanda

Re: Sail Dimensions?
May I suggest that you ask this in a piratey-type forum? Methinks you might get more info thar.

Re: Sail Dimensions?
Hey, good point. I'll post this over at the cove as well!
I was in a castle mindset, seeing as I need to make it with a Crownie emblem.

Re: Sail Dimensions?
Hey Amanda, may I suggest Fry Slayer's Brickshelf gallery. He's made some really nice Black Falcon sails:

Thanks for the responses!
"Hey Amanda, may I suggest Fry Slayer's Brickshelf gallery. He's made some really nice Black Falcon sails:"
Thanks for the link, Ari. That may prove to be helpful in aquiring a template of that style of sail! I haven't checked out Fry's gallery in a while, his work is so flawless!

Thank you, Mark! I actually just ran across a gallery on Brickshelf containing scans of various sails - So that should solve the actual template making problem, just need to figure out the sizes of them all now. I'll see if I can't do a little more digging for that info.. -somewhere- before I trouble you!
Some of them have dimensions written on their Bricklink page that says "10 x 13" or something like that, but I'm not sure if that means studs or what.
Again, thanks for your input! I really appreciate your help!

Re: Sail Dimensions?
Well I'm available if you need me. I already have all the sizes and templates drawn up for those ones on Brickshelf. The sizes listed on the ones on Bricklink are stud sizes (10 studs by 13 studs), but some of them are 1 stud out (in my opinion).Lamanda2 wrote:"Drop me an email with what you're after, I'll fix you up with everything I can"

Thanks! I've got the sail all set and printed now (Wow! It sure is big compared to what I usually do!), just need to treat the fabric and cut it out so I can get it to the customer. I'll let them be the final judge as to how it came out, but from what I can see, it turned out quite nice.

It has indeed. The colouring is nice, crisp, and uniform. Well done. Makes me wonder if I should bother with sails at allLamanda2 wrote:but from what I can see, it turned out quite nice.

Hey, let me know if I step on your toes or anything like that, Mark! I know fabric is your territory more than it is mine!
I was a bit worried about the color being uniform.. I know when I do a batch of capes, there's a chance of color bleeding when applying the stiffener, but I lucked out! I actually don't run into that problem as much as I used to, thank goodness! Guess it was a matter of trial and error.
Thanks again,
~Amanda

It's all good. You don't have to worry about my toes. You can do things that I can't........yet When it's another talented designer like yourself, I'd rather work with them rather than work against them.Lamanda2 wrote:Hey, let me know if I step on your toes or anything like that, Mark! Trial and error, thats the name of this game. I for one have tried a many a technique for various things and have failed in just as many as well. But if we don't try, we don't succeed.Lamanda2 wrote:I was a bit worried about the color being uniform.. I am concerned for you that taking on sails is going to make you go through a stack more ink!! But I guess you know what you're doing.

Good, good, good, that's the way that I look at it, too!
I like that "yet"!

Yeah. Boy, I had myself a time with color bleeding and stuff, leading to stacks of rejected items.. I'm happy that is behind me now, for the most part, at least. If you have any questions that I might be able to help you with, let me know!

Heh.. Tell me about it! Luckily the printer I'm using now does pretty well with ink, but still.. Guess I'll have to come up with a bunch of white-colored sails!
