CCCVII Entry - The King's Royal Guardsman
This is an entry into the CCVII custom minifigure category:
THE KING'S ROYAL GUARDSMAN
The king has decided that in these uncertain times, more protection is warranted. He has created the Royal Guardman post, and has found the most loyal men in his army to protect his life.

Thanks Kevin! The axe was designed in a 3D modeling program and made by a company called Shapeway in the Netherlands. They use a 3D printing machine to make prototypes. It is not ABS plastic, but looks okay after painting. Thanks again.Kevin1990 wrote:wow very nice, I made a template just like that one. came out pretty nice

That's almost like cheating! The design is clean, everything works well together, and you customized the bejeeses out of the weapon without overdoing it. Nice work!shmails wrote:The axe was designed in a 3D modeling program...

I wouldn't say cheating, I would say using all my resources to my advantage. It is the same process that brickarms, brickforge, and even LEGO themselves use to make new pieces. The real problem is that it is obviously not abs plastic, which always detracts from the look a bit. Thanks!Lord Mikal wrote:That's almost like cheating! Nice work, I figured you would come up with something good in this category after your excellent work in that weapons contest last year. It seems you have done it again, great work on that ax.

Thanks! That was definitely the hardest part this year, and I had much less time to figure this one out, but I like the final result too.Seikfreid wrote:Nice work, I figured you would come up with something good in this category after your excellent work in that weapons contest last year. Re: CCCVII Entry - The King's Royal Guardsman
I would love to have the fig w/o the axe. I know this isn't the thread for buying and trading, but if you were to put this fig up for sell, how much did it cost to make it and how much would you charge to sell it ?
^You should be more concerned with what's written above^

If you are really interested in buying one, send me a message and we can discuss cost. I am a Chief Smithy at Brickforge.com and had a request there for a tutorial on how to make these figs. I hope to have it finished some time next week. The helm is a Brickforge product that you can order yourself, and the cloth is printable fabric available at Michael's or any crafts store. I will upload a template with the tutorial. With all that, you should be able to make your own, however, if you are more interested in just getting finished figures, let me know and we can work something out!mrkovach wrote:I would love to have the fig w/o the axe. Nice fig! Very clean and cohesive. Dark Blue is a favorite color of mine, and I really like those highlights in the fig.
I've picked up a few 3D printed items over the years, and depending on the resolution of the printer, the parts were decent, particularly after, as you mentioned, a bit of sanding and painting. Still, like you said, there's no substitute for ABS!

Rapid prototyping is definitely a versatile method that's used by many (including LEGO) to test out new parts, but just to be clear, the BrickArms prototypes that Will produces are made via injection of ABS plastic into molds he's cut using his home CNC machine. The advantage of that system of prototyping is that the resulting items are 100% high-quality ABS plastic (or sometimes whatever random plastic Will is experimenting with!).shmails wrote:It is the same process that brickarms, brickforge, and even LEGO themselves use to make new pieces. For no one, no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. This you can trust.

Wow, that halberd (or axe) is wicked sweet. You did a really nice job with his clothing too. If I were king, I'd want him guarding me.
