Capes or cloaks

what kind of cloth do you use when making custom cloaks. Do you just trace the existing capesand cut them out.

I use paper.

And I trace official ones, and cut them out!

I haven't yet. I would like to try that though (in a dark blue and red) but have so many other capes I haven't needed too (yet!). I'm sure if you went to a fabric store and brought a cape with you and should to someone who worked there, they could help you out.

I would try using a thin cotton fabric with a tight weave, and spraying it with some sort of fabric stiffener before you cut out the shape. It would stop the fabric fraying and give it a similar feel to the real thing.

Fabric stiffener should be available from any shop that sells tapes and things for making curtains, as it`s often used for stiffening blinds. Or you could try painting the fabric with a dilute solution of water-based white glue and letting it dry flat before cutting it out. I`ve used this technique with other non-Lego customs.

I use a felt material for my custom capes. You can find felt squares in a variety of colors at most hobby shops. They are inexpensive, and the capes don't fray.

Rather than trace the LEGO cape, I usually pin it to the material and cut around it.

Ditto. I rarely customize but I have made a cape for a CCRP character:

I just traced a brown cape I had handy and punched out the holes for the neck with a holepuncher.

I have yet to make any custom capes, I hanve hundreds of official cloth capes right now, but I am planning on experimenting with some tan material that I have. I want to make a cloak with cowl, a long robe and a long coat. Once I have it completed I will post the results. I don't think I would use paper as my minifig storage systme would leave me with a lot of ripped or damaged capes.
