Brasso on KK2 parts

Post by Sir Terrance »

I read this post on LUGNET: http://news.lugnet.com/castle/?n=20184 and now I'm scared to try Brasso on KK2 bardings and armor. I wanted an all dark red barding plain, but I don't know if it will break on me. And is LEGO using different plastics? I'm sick of hearing LEGO say "we are all about quality, the plastic will never change, blah blah blah blah blah..." since it seems like such a lie. If anyone tried this and it worked, please tell me how you did it. Maybe that person was just pressing way too hard. Thanks.

I've Brassoed three different styled bardings and haven't had a problem yet. I don't really anticipate a problem with the new dark red one, but I don't really plan on using Brasso on any of them until I have over 10 (eight at the moment).

The only thing that gives me pause is the black armor. There's a two stage print on it, with a reflective print that gives it that raised surface, and then a translucent red color over that. The raised reflective print is undoubtedly thicker and more difficult to remove, and the disaster refered to in the link either confirms it or the writer approaching the problem wrong. I have five of the new black, and hadn't planned on stripping off the print at this point - perhaps x-acto and brasso in combination.

I really hope using the X-Acto won't happen. :( I'm a kid,so I can't use an X-Acto.I'm sure my dad would do it,but it'll probably come out better by myself...
Sheesh. They had to do that didn't they...

There are no KKII sets here in Calgary, but when we get some, I will take the bullet and try removing the print from the black armor. I will use TTK's method of first cutting off the raised bits with an exacto knife and then I will try brasso for the rest of the decal. I am crossing my fingers, because I wanted at least one purly black knight without having to resort to paint.

I don't have any of the sets yet and I wasn't aware of the fact it was raised. I think I might keep it on since raised seems like it may be cool. Do the other ones have raised printing, or just the black armor?

Just the black. One of my armors has the red printing offset so that you can see the bare silver, which is the only reason why I know about the nature of the printing. Now that I think about it, that one is ruined anyway, so....

(a flash of reflected light from a finely honed #11 X-Acto blade as it descends closer and closer....)

Dude! Serf's up! You got this place wired. 8)

Sorry, they are playing Endless Summer endlessly on cable right now.

Ask you dad if he can show you how to use an X-Acto or at least watch as he works. Two quick rules: always use a sharp knife (toss the blade if gets dull) and always cut away from yourself (consider just where the blade will go if it suddenly gives way, and consider this before you start cutting).

One thing I would like to add: Use a cutting board, if you wreck some furniture, you may not ever be able to handle one of those tools again!

So TTK,

Did you put the offset printed armor to the knife yet? I am tempted to purchase the set to try it out, but if you have done it, perhaps I won't need to. Let us know if your experiment is a success.

Yeah. We'd probably do it on the floor on a piece of wood or something, since he usually has it around. :)
