Gad, now I'm writing about this on two different sites...

Aside from comments over on Lugnet, I think the warhammer/bec de corbin is just about perfect. I like the spikey ball variant of the flail, though designing and casting that I imagine is more difficult. I'd still buy what you have already shown. I'd also suggest a Holy Water Sprinkler (spikey ball without swivels/chains) possibly with a longer foot soldier's shaft, but I think the two you have probably are sufficient in themselve since they are more readily recognizable.

I like the pike, the mace, and the axe.
Probably about twenty of each. maybe more of the pike and axe...

No problem. As long as when you get them, I see them in use. How many "Helms Deep" dioramas am I going to see with those pitiful spears for Orc pikes?

You get the idea.

to be honest I don't "do" LOTR dioramas. Whats already been done out there can put anything I do to shame, and I prefer to come up with my own storyline.

However, this guy needs a little more protection...

So what really is that pole arm? It is NOT a pike, though it is just about long enough to be one. But it's too long for just about any other polearm - which are usually about 10 feet give or take a foot or two. The head is somewhere between a later military bill, and a combination glaive, though I had presumed that the glaive look to the cutting blade was more a function of ease of construction of the master model and for durablity.

Actually - though I suppose this can't be done at this point - I'd like to see the warhammer and flail replace the bill/pike/whatever so that there is a one-handed weapon set, and then another with just pole arms (bill, voulge, pole-axe, partisan, fauchard, fork, spetum, etc.).

Wishful thinking aside, I actually like that the bill is too long. I can trim a bit of the extraneous projections and balance the blade portion and I have a real pike (rather than my 3-part Lego constructions) or I can cut down the length and have a more realistic bill.

"Pikes" were anywhere from 12 -15 ft. long, some even longer.
Used to stop the calvary charge, hence the length.

"Pollarms" were usually 4-6 ft. long intended for foot combat.
Most were fitted with an axe type head of
some sort, along with top spikes and back spikes.
There were some versions with hammer heads too.

A pollaxe - bill, glaive, etc. would be around 8-10 ft. long.
Again, intended for foot combat. The ability to reach into
the 2nd or 3rd row of the enemy ranks is deadly.

My "pike" is a combination between a pike and a pollaxe,
which gives you the option of cutting it down.

There you have it.

12 feet would be an extremely short pike (Scottish?). The Swiss used 15-20 foot pikes (they could get longer). I've never seen it specifically stated for medieval combat, but I presume it followed the same pattern that it did when Alexander's successors started fighting (pike facing pike would get progressively longer searching for an edge until they reached a terminal unwieldiness somewhere around 22-24 feet).

A poleaxe (yes, I know, is was refering to the poll and not the pole) is a specific polearm, favored by heavily armored knights fighting on foot, and doesn't particularly resemble your polearm. Which points up the difficulty of polearms in general since the terminology and nomenclature isn't exactly standardized, but I haven't seen "Pollaxe" used as a generic for polearm (which may only mean that my study has been limited). I'd say that a case could be made that your polearm is either glaive-based or bill-based - the experts can't agree, so I don't have a problem not agreeing with myself!

Anyway, my two cents worth, and that may be overestimating the value. 8)
