both visors are interesting (a stone armored group would be wild!) but I am interested in getting some of this vinyl dye. I thought it was just paint.
So does it actually bond with the plastic then? with paint, you can get something to take paint off with (I had some stuff that didnt melt the plastic) and repaint it if you want, but I gather the dye is permanent?
seems a better deal to me...

:D
It not only bonds, but it gets absorbed. The amount of build-up is nill. It is 100% permanent.

However, even though you can't remove it, you can re-dye the element again, several times if necessary.

Thanks for sharing. Can't find any of the stuff yet, though. One or two purple armors are enough - I have at least 10 I'd like to swap out for LEGO-esque colors.

Ditto, not to mention the fact that it'd be nice to have other things in colors we have always wanted.
hmmm.. I think I would like white euro armor for the Kings guard of the Seven Kingdoms...

I just want to say something about finding the stuff - First: look at autoparts stores, if you don't find anything, look at hardware stores.

Second: if you're looking for it with the paint, you're looking in the wrong place. I've found it in three stores now, and each one had the stuff in different places, but none were with the auto paint. Near it, yes, but in a different isle (or in one case on the other side of the isle opposite the autopaint).

Third: Make sure you're buying Vinyl Dye. If you see the words "paint" or "coating", it most likely is NOT dye. One of the more popular descriptors is 'vinyl color spray.'

As for colors, it seems to be available more in dark colors (like dark red, black, grey), but is available in white, off-white, tan and a light grey that I've not yet been able to track down. It also comes in bright red and bright blue, if you look hard enough.

It's also possible to get the stuff color-matched and mixed for you just like any normal paint, but it'll cost you. $4.50 for a rattle can off the shelf, something like $22 a rattle can for a custom mix.

Wow, a bit pricey for the custom stuff... besides, I might be a bit embarresed to whip out a torso and say "please match this" to the auto-parts guy. :)

Still, I'm a huge fan of this tactic, especially after seeing your bone warrior. I'd say you've definately taking customizing up another notch for us all.

Believe me, they get weirder requests than that. I know several auto parts guys. I am going to ask one of them on Monday, if they have this in their store.

I got some for $8.83 at an Auto Paint Superstore, and it worked awesome. They had at least 30 colors. They were mostly meant to match interior colors. Lots of grey, brown and tan. There were a few greens, a red or two, some lite yellow and white etc. The results were great. I recommend you all go and get some.

The color I got was a dark grey with metallic fleck and the green and the purple face masks look so incredible now. I think the red one is a little boring looking. The lite blue looks pretty cool. Better than Jelly beans that is for sure.

I've been persistently calling stores in my area (Northern Virginia) for a few months now and have yet to find one that carries either Plasti-Kote or Mar-Hyde. Can anyone chime in with where they've found their dyes, esepcially if you're in this area? I've tried Plasti-kote's product locator and none of the stores it lists carry it now.

The stores that *should* carry it all seem to have Duplicolor instead. Anthony or anyone else, have you had any experience with that brand? Is it the same as the Mar-Hyde or Plasti-kote varieties?

Thanks,

A month later and still no luck! I'm starting to think these cans are hiding from me... Can anyone help point me in the right direction? Surely there's someone in the area or a national chain that definitely carries the stuff?

Sorry for not replying on the earlier post. Duplicolor is the first brand I bought, mentioned in the first post of this thread. I had bad luck with it, but that was because it was not a true vinyl dye.

Kaminoan (Jared) recently found some Duplicolor vinyl dye, but I seem to remember him saying it didn't work as well as the Mar Hyde. (please correct me if I'm wrong, Jared)

I've only ever found the stuff at O'Reily auto parts stores, as well as a few local auto parts stores. Each time I've found them, its always near the paint, but not with the paint. In fact in two of the stores, if you were looking directly at the paint, the vinyl dye would have been behind you.

I've also found it once at an O'Reilys where the boat and fiberglass paint was.
