This may be a good idea at first, but then it could be that his home on the inside looks no different from the "average" LEGO collector. I have a lot of current year sets that are still in the the box and would not like the police rummaging through my stuff making me present receipts for all my sets I have(plus all of the sorted LEGO). I doubt the police would be able to tell the difference, even with an AFOL on their staff.

Sadly too true. Still, it could be figured out by the lack of MOCs. Assuming he doesn't build with what he steals. Now that is a disturbing thought, that some AFOL's gigantic collection and cool MOCs are the result of major theft. We can only hope the guy only steals the stuff, nothing more.

Of course, there are also plenty of Bricklink sellers who buy tons of sets just to resell, and also collectors who buy sets but don't build MOCs. Of course, both these groups would probably have the boxes...

Not to mention that the police would need a search warrant to even be in his house looking for Lego in the first place.

Anyway, that stinks. I always wonder how suspicious we AFOLs look, since we're adults, perusing the Lego aisle with a close eye. And I, for one, am constantly taking sets off the shelves to price-check them(yes, I always put them back.) But to a store that's already overly suspicious because of shoplifting, I suppose I could look a bit odd.

I was at my local TRU and was asked to leave my bag at the front desk. I was rather surprised and asked if they had this due to shop lifting. They said no they were told it had to do with terrorism.... sad day to hear that would be an issue in a toy store.

I usually hit the toay stores with my family. No odd glares then, until my almost two year old hits the lego display case buttons over and over and over again to see the lights, hear the noises and look at the lego scenes laid out in them.
