Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 6067 Guarded Inn.

Guarded Inn was released in 1986 for the Lion knights. It has an timber frame inn connected to a castle wall section. The set comes with a Lion archer, a Lion soldier, one Black Falcon knight and his horse, a lady, and various accessories. Rare pieces that can only be found in this set are the black "food and drink" flag and the red "tudor" wall pieces.

In 2001, Guarded Inn was released again as the first LEGO Legend set with the number 10000. The Legend printed pieces, the tudor wall pieces and food flag, differ slightly from the originals.

One of the all time greats. A simple but beautiful creation, the Guarded Inn was a perfect addition to any modular village. The wall piece and inn were very well designed, and the figs were perfect complements for the set. 10/10, hands down.

No violence depicted in the set design or box, males and female, combatants and non-combatants, ability for multi role play.

A detailed Tudor structure 10-12 studs wide with standard walling able to be attached to other system Lego sets.

Good part selection.

If I had to make a choice and only keep one castle Lego set I would say I want the 2002 LEGO Legend Castle Collection:

Nobody could only want to have a single Legend Castle Set!

My first few Castle sets including a few Lions, but for years and years (this was pre-Bricklink), I never dreamed it actually possible to get a new batch of the same, and the thought that I might actually get a Black Falcon (I had none) was then undreamed.

Then the Guarded Inn was released as a Legend. Consequently, I have high nostalgic value invested in this set. That being said, however, I think it's a pretty good set. It has an intensive supply of basic parts, a few nice rarer parts like the tudor wall panelling and the grapevine flag, as well as totally cool figs.

Parts: 9/10
Playability: 8.5/10 (two factions, potential for romance, good base location for adventures)
Figs/Accessories: 8.5/10
Design (contemporary): 9/10 (One of the most classic Legoland era Castle sets)
Design (universal): 10/10 (almost a perfect set and rightly deserving of being the first Legend)
Nostalgia: 8.5/10 (were I but a bit older, who knows where she'd be...)

Overall Score: 8.92/10 A- (Wow... I can't believe it's only an A-, broken down... I'd have sworn it was an A+ set.)

A classic. How could this not have been reviewed already? Its pretty much everything you could want in a Castle set. Lovely design, civilian setting, knights from two factions. Who can ask for anything more.

I've got both the original and the re-release.

This is one fantabulous set! Most certainly a superb set to be the first castle Legend. I came into LEGO too late to buy the original, and always wanted it as a kid. When I saw the re-release I bought the Legend three set pack without much thought, it was like an instinct. It was instinct in the same way this set is just a plain 'ol good set!!!

I missed out on the original but bought 3 copies of the Legend, 2 for me and 1 for my 7 year old daughter (who will be 13 next week  )

A great example of "medieval civilian" set and its appeal. Interestingly my daughter liked it because of the female fig and that it was "like a restaurant". I liked (and still like) it because it was an inn. A place for weary travelers to be refreshed and for villians to meet and plan treachery

The modular aspect is appealing, which added to the compatibility of the time. That is LEGO bricks are compatible from set to set and theme to theme, but at the time the Castle sets were extra compatible as they could click together with technic pins. A similar function is seen in the 7036 and 7094.

THE GREATEST CASTLE SET EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has great design andthe wall is wery nicely attached to the inn. And I love the "tunnel" under the wall it can be used as a stable or armory.
I would give this st 11/10

I stared at this in Shop at Home catalogs for years and years but never had enough money. Then there was a ten-year dark age and this set is what brought me back. My most desired childhood set made real.

The hanging tavern sign is made from PP instead of ABS plastic and it's textured surface doesn't hold the printing as well resulting in a dotted/pitted image. That's my only real complaint.

This set has it all. Four great minifigs, a healthy chunk of modular wall, a well designed little building, and a variety of accessories. All for just $25. Part it out, display it, collect it, this set appealed to everybody.

The 2002-2003 castle sets were the theme's swan song. Despite having just three sets and an accessory pack, it was the strongest castle lineup since 1986 and likely the best I'll ever see again. I wish I stocked up a bit more on these sets as they were the last great sources of original gray parts, plumes, and 80s-style minifigures.

Wasn't available when I came out of my dark ages in the mid-eighties and was out of work when on Shop-at-home the second time. Hmmm, I think this is a very nice set that I wish I had. 10/10

Has it really been that long (six years) since it was re-released?

Indeed. It still feels new to me and it's hard to believe. Then I look at what it would cost to purchase another and reality smacks me in the face.

This set is great, excellent, wonderful..... well you all get my drift. At first I was miffed that it had just one wall, but then the hamster jumped back onto the wheel in my head and boom! Duh it is modular. You can join to to other sets, let the Black Falcon's Fortress. (another Legend re-release). I only ordered one in 2001, and even today I don't know if I would order multiples, but it is such an iconic set that I think I only need one.

I give it a 9 of 10. Why not a 10 of 10. Well I could never get all the guys in to the inn for chow-time. :)

There is nothing wrong with this set in my mind. You have your mini figs, Lion and Black Falcon, plus a female/cvilian mini fig as well. Plus it is an inn that can be used in many different settings.

Hey lego folks. Take note of the gem of a set! Wink Wink, nudge nudge.
