Weekly Set Review: Guarded Inn

This is one of my favorite sets. What more can I say? I love it.

Hello!

This set has been one of my favourites since its release in 1986. And it is to this day.

When I opened the catalogue that year I was in awe when I glanced at the Castle pages. There was shown a new Château (the Black Falcons Fortress), obviously manned by the Eagle knights (as I called the Black Falcons back than), there was also a maiden in a cart accommpanied by several Lion knights. And in the centerfold there was the sign of an inn. Of a red timber-framed inn with a female inn-keeper (an inn-keepress?) What a beautiful image that was. Two pages filled with knights, and not the slightest hint of any war or fight.

I got both the Black Falcons Fortress and the Guarded Inn for my birthday two months later. I still have a copy of it assembled and displayed.

OK, that's not exactly a review, but I get the feeling I already wrote about that set before.

This is a great set! I got it for my birthday when it was re-released. I was so happy when I got it for at the time, it was my biggest Castle set. It has lots of nice peices, great figs, and just a great set.

One of the best sets ever created.

In all honesty, nothing more needs to be said. This set is that good. It provides a great assortment of bricks and a side of the middle ages that is rarely explored in the world of children's toys. If only the LEGO of the 21st century would build some civilian pieces such as this.

Absolute perfection.

Ahh.... The one set I never ccould forget (apart from Black falcons' fortress) and yet I was never able to get it. I say 10/10 no challenge. Ienjoy the idea of a inn/wall. Good protection, and yet it is a little small. But some expanding can fix that.

This set is, in my opinion, the best Lego set ever made.

This set is by far the coolest non military themed castle set of the era. I was just a little too young to go get it when it was originally released and always looked to the catalague of that year and dropped my head a little looking at it.Then when I was 14-15 my mom made an order for me with S@H and I got her to ask where all the cool castle had gone. This was when the KKI was being sold off cheap so I got some but the best part of the order was the information I got with it, my mom found out that LEGO was phasing out castle after the KKI debacle but she was told that next year ('01) was gonna be good. My mother stopped spending any money on LEGO for me for the rest of the year and when the Legends were released next year I found under the Xmas tree the entire Legends collection. The next year I had a small PT job and ordered another Guarded Inn and BFF and ever since I've enjoyed all the rare pieces immensely. For the inn sign alone a 10/10.
So aside from the difference in plastic already mentioned what about the newer version was any different from the original?

Nothing quite noticible. However, the saddle has two clips (originally one), the figs have the most solid structure inside (originally the moderately solid structure, pic), and the red timberframe corners are missing one black line at the bottom. As I said, that's all nothing that would be immediately noticible. But if somebody is about to offer you a Legend set for the Original, it’s possible to tell them apart.

The food flag printing is also different. As in many 80's sets, you can see the small gold dots in the original sign printing. The new sign printing is solid.

This is my #1 most wanted set right now. At some point I am going to have to just lay down the scratch for it. I never knew about the re-release, or I would have bought it then. Unfortunately, I was in a dark age at that point.
