how many posts do you need to a different rank gong farmer archer freeman etc.

You will need around 30 to become a villein. Your rank changes about every 50 posts.

LONGBOW: browse around in the Administrative forum for a bit: you should find a whole thread that not only explains the ranks, but is a part of their history. :)
