It exist a program for it.
It's name LDRAW and it's made for PC.
You can find it at www.ldraw.org
It's free.
There is a tutorial too, which is essential for the understanding of the program, and you for the piece number you can refer to another site:
www.peeron.com
They have the whole list.
I created some MOC with this, but I didn't buy the piece for build them now.
Have fun!

lets start from the main page:
http://www.ldraw.org/
on the left we see Main Menu, Operating System.. Download:Get Started
http://www.ldraw.org/modules.php?op=mod ... le&sid=126
And this contains all you need to know for Apple, Windows, or Linux
you will need to download both ldraw and an interface program, like MLCAD. To do renders, I've had luck using LPub, which requires you to download Lp3 and POVRay. However, on the Ldraw website there are answers to many questions, and even a place to email questions.
I've met Tim Courtney, who is one of the gurus behind ldraw (one of the guys you can email questions - he wrote a book about it), and he's a really nice guy and eager to support Ldraw in anyway he can.

Also the Lugnet group devoted to this is here:

You'll probably find a lot of expertise there. The book Lenny mentioned is announced here:

And you can even download a chapter for free here:
