What set(s) should I get next?

Postby KingDavid » Wed Dec 24, 2008 7:01 pm

Okay, so I now have all of the 2007 - 2008 LEGO Castle sets except for 5614 The Good Wizard, 7029 Skeleton Ship Attack, and 852293 Castle Giant Chess Set. At this point, I can afford to get either the Castle Giant Chess set or a few of the Knights Kingdom sets I've been looking at. Here's what's on my wanted list at the moment:

8813 Battle at the Pass
8822 Gargoyle Bridge
8823 Mistlands Tower

It would cost me roughly the same either way. With the chess set, I'd get 31 more minifigs, two more giant trolls, and a number of spare parts. With the other sets, I get 20 more minifigs and a ton of spare parts. I'd like to have a couple Good Wizards, eight more Dwarves, and those cool mini siege towers that the Skeleton archers ride on in the chess set. But I'd get plenty of parts to expand my castle and build some sweet siege vehicles out of the other sets. I just can't decide. What do you guys think?

I say just forget about those KK sets and go for the Chess set. That thing is a treasure trove of minifigs and neat accessories. I can't see buying it and not being happy with it, as long as you are cool with dropping that much coin at once.

Don't forget the medieval market village comes out in roughly a week, plus who knows if there will be additional 2009 castle sets on the way soon.

I would also not bother with the KK2 sets. Besides looking amateurish/cartoonish, the biggest drawback is Lego fans' general disdain for them - the stigma attached to the "Jellybean" knights is even greater than what people have for Fright Knights.

So, KK2 sets are not fun to play with, and they have minimal resale value since other people loath them as well.

I think it depends on which you need more, Minifigs(Chess Set) or Bricks for building(the KK2 sets). Then again if you're in need of peasants and such I suggest getting the Medieval Market Place.

Having just received mine, I vouch for the chess set not having a few extras, but actually TONS!
I got mine second hand (from a member here) and it came half assembled, so I just spent several hours the other day sorting, and I believe the + 2600 piece count. It also seems to have a large amount of the parts we castlers enjoy (slopes, inverted slopes, headlights, weapons, shields, etc.) and is mostly brickbuilt so there's plenty of MOC fodder for all purposes, in several colors.
I know that with my new color bucket with all the pieces from a dwarf mine, couple jousts, and 2 skelly ships, plus the chess set, I can now do something grandish if I ever find a month off work, and that's primarily the chess set's fault.
To heck with KKII, just go get a chess set man,

Okay, thanks for all the advice, you guys. I went ahead and ordered the Medieval Market Village, the Giant Castle Chess Set, and I had enough left over for a Skeleton Ship Attack. My market village will be here Monday and I should get the skeleton ship within a week. Unfortunately, it looks like the chess set is on backorder at LEGO S@H. But at least I got one ordered. I was worried they were going to be discontinued soon. Thanks again. :)

I ordered it at www.shop4toyz.com yesterday. It was $89.99, which wasn't too bad for it. I do see that they have raised the price on it to $99.99 since yesterday. I wonder if my order was responsible for that. Hmmm...

I'd go with the chess set.

Chess set: excellent figs, and you can use the bricks and accessories. Since you have many fantasy era sets already, they'll fit in pretty well. In case you're wondering what to do with the black and white tiles, maybe make one or more tile floors or something...

KK sets: good bricks, but the figs are likely to be wasted...

I'd skip the KK2 stuff. It really wasn't that good and the new castle stuff is much better. So I'd save my money for that. Plus, as nanuck said, there is the Medieval Market Place and it is a great set. I would like to get a second one...

Easy:

1'd spend my benjamins in the Medieval Market and the Chess set.
I own the latter and I can tell you, it's the best lego money I've spent.

Set is way cool.

Happy shopping!

Gotcha. I got the Medieval Market Village on Monday and my Castle Giant Chess Set is ordered and should be shipped out in two or three weeks, when S@H gets more in stock. Thanks for the advice.

Anyway, I've been thinking about getting 3739 Blacksmith Shop lately. I see that it's $200 on BrickLink, but it looks like it would fit nicely with my new village. I'm just not sure if I can justify the price, when I could simply buy another village for half that much and customize the buildings. Decisions, decisions...
