^^Nice comparison.

Yeah, it DOES seems to be smaller looking. I guess the realistic head is, well, less blocky, so it looks trimmed down. It'll get awhile to get used to. Let's see if the new headgear will improve the overall look.

It does strike me how small the new horse and the minifigure sitting on it seem compared to the old ones.
A nice comparison; Thanks for taking the time to put it together. I hadn't really noticed some of the details on the new horse until seeing your photographs -- which were well done, btw. I'm glad that you also included the 1978 brick horse in the discussion.

The new horse does look a lot 'sleeker'. You could always use them as different ranks, with the old ones as heavy cavalry and the new ones as light calvary for example etc. The main difference I see is the head, which once the old one has a helmet and barding on, isn't noticeable.

It isn't so different unlike the old and new dog for example. I look forward to picking some up with LOTR stuff, and also whether it works it's way into non-licensed City stuff, or future castle ranges.

Thank you for the compliments, much appreciated. :)

Indeed, putting the horses next to each other really put into perspective how they have gotten smaller over time, especially if one considers the 1978 starting point... Although with the barding and armor the old horse effectively got a bit larger during its run.

If I'm not mistaken, not only is the head smaller in the new horse, the minifigure also sits a little lower on it, which increases the diminutive feeling.

I finally got a chance to get my hands on the new horse. Overall, I have to say I love the change. It looks good, works well with my collection, and seems like a great improvement over the classic one. This horse should replace all the classic ones in future Castle themes and Town themes. It needs to be more widely available in colors also, and on just this piece alone, I can see tons of new sets for Town and another reason to bring back a Wild West theme. As far as compatibility with the classic horse, I think it fits as well as the newer pupil faces do with the classic smiley. Different, but close enough to be acceptable with mixing them. Now, use your expanded color palette and make us those horses in a wide variety of colors that we all know and want out of horses. With the new "rearing" feature, I think we can also have some solid bley and dark bley horses for statues. In retrospect, I think this horse should have debuted when the new cow did so that the cow didn't seem so awkward at the time. Bravo to LEGO for this change being an A+ one from my perspective.

Interesting to note, I've been popping in and out of LEGO stores in my area (living 10 minutes from one is a huge perk  ) and I've noticed that horses have begun popping up in PaB! White horses, albeit, but still.

So for those of you living near a LEGO store, I'd suggest looking at PaB for some horses if you'd like to pick up a few for a last hurrah! Can't guarantee anything, but it's better than nothing!
