The large green base plate is a plus. Real Lion Knights instead of Jesters and a true Dragon King and Queen would have made it a home run, but it's still solid overall and a good value at $50.
I'm sure we would be all very grateful if you were able to post pictures of the figures! How do they compare to 'normal' figures? Or are they more like battle-pack quality plastic?
No problem: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=503757
Might have to wait until it's public.

Not the best pictures, but will hopefully give folks an idea.
I'm no expert, but the plastic seems to be more battle-pack quality, though it still seems fine to me.

Thanks for the pictures! Good to know they are not glued, but I guess the quality was to be expected for such a large number of figs in one set at that price.

Interesting to see the dragon knight king/wizard has a plain hat and grey beard rather than a black beard like the 'official' version.

Still disappointed at the lack of new figs!!

I would have thought the wizard would make a far better "bishop" figure and Lego created a new King and Queen. The Queen could be done like the Evil Queen from a previous chess set, exept a normal yellow head rather than a skull and wearing the Dragon's breastplate. Mind you , do the Dragon Knights actually have such heads of state?

If this helps drive down prices on BL, I'm all for it. ;)

Same thing I was considering.

I mean, less than $2.00 USD per fully equipped minifig?

Would be truly awesome if prices did drop. I wouldn't mind increasing my Lion Kingdom.

Wouldn't we all, but I wouldn't count on it, TLC has never done one for a license theme and seeing as they still haven't done star wars after 11 years i wouldn't expect to see one sone. Even if do make a chess set for a licenced theme it will be starwars.

By looking at the MSRP prices of the LOTR sets, I can imagine you'd have to give an arm and a leg to get a LOTR chess set if one was to come out.

I bought one of these Kingdom's Chess sets. Well worth it. A GREAT battlepack, which is exactly what I used it for. :) Just wish the pawns used nasal helms instead of kettle hats, but you can't have everything. A quick switcharoo gives me a lot of standard troops.

I think if I were to play chess with this set, I would switch the jokers and the knights on the King's side so that the jokers would be the bishops and the knights would be... well... the knights.

OKay so I just got the chess set and it is awsome. I just finished it like ten minutes ago. Here are the pros and the cons..

Pros
-lots of minifigs
-buildable base plate(which means no glue!)
-You actually get to build the minifigs
-Cheepest chess set yet

Cons
-the BUPP (Big ugly plastic peace)

All i can say about this set is its the best chess set so far(not including the really big one). Its better than the crownies because it has four more figs,no skeletons and real figs, cheeper than the others, and the base plates not glued. Again all i can say is this is a great set. :D

P.S.Interesting mine came with a extra 4x4 blakc plate :tasty:

The two that I ordered showed up. This is actually the first chess set I've ordered, since I had no use for the skellies (except stealing their accessories for my human "skelly" faction) or jellybeans. Would've preferred two more knights instead of jesters. The jester isn't exactly something I'm interested in doubling up on (nevermind getting four or more), and I already had him from the impulse. The quivers/xbows are a small consolation, though, and the head is definitely useful.

That's just nitpicking, though. The set is a great army building value, and that's not even counting the baseplate. The big ugly piece doesn't even bother me...looks like it could probably be a good starting point for a piece of non-Lego wargaming terrain.

The picture on the box shows all the pawns with just one face (smile with stubble for the Lions, goofy gap-toothed smile for the Dragons.) Is that actually the case, or was that a photoshop issue?

Yeah, that's the way it is.

Got mine for Father's Day! :tasty:

Excited to have this many additional figs for armies, even if the faces are repeats and the jesters are useless (hey, perhaps its time for that 'traveling troupe'?!).

The base plate may be "meh", but perhaps it'd make a wicked 'Game of Thrones' MOC station.

Great for the price, but wOw, I still look back at that $150 Crownies set...it's a jaw-dropper still.
