I find this year's Castle line up to be rather bland, but its nicely supplemented by the other lines LEGO currently has going. As bland as the current line may be with its Lions and Dragons etc, the sets are still of better quality then what they were producing in the late 90's to early 2000's.

Why they got rid of the useful minifig hand/clip compatible on the old sword with the new one that gives me flashbacks of that nasty sci-fi sword that came with the jellybean knights a few years back. Stupid, stupid decision. Question: Do any of the designers at lego ever actually play with the toys?
I know. I feel the same way. The new sword is pointless. Why not use either the gladius, claymore, or classic sword? I mean, the classic sword even looks better. And the crosspiece is a bar! That can be useful. I don't know what the Lion king was thinking when he equipped his mounted knights with something that withers in comparison to what(claymore) a dragon unmounted knight(see kings castle) is using. Use the glamorous or claymore or bring back the classic sword.
Sir Erathor wrote:I haven't built the King's Castle yet, but so far Dragon Mountain is my least favourite for what you get for the price, though the dragon is awesome. The Forest Ambush and Gatehouse Raid tie at the top of my list.
By the way, has anyone noticed that in the LEGO catalogue the Lion knight included in the King's Castle is named 'The White Knight', even though he's exactly the same as the Lion knight included in Dragon Mountain? The Dragon Mountain knight is just called 'Lion Knight'. Not a big deal, just something I noticed :)
Actually, I've seen what the one from dragon mountain looks like, and I have the kings castle(which is awesome), so I know they have different faces. The kings castle ones face is awesome. It's got a grimace and a grey-Brown beard.
Formendacil wrote:Do those who have the new Castle sets want to weigh in on the new bardings? So far I have failed completely to warm to them from the pictures in the box-art--possibly because the poses they're given that utilise the new horse's ability to rear don't "work" in my imagination with the barding (an imagination coloured by an understanding of how the old horses and bardings worked). How do they come off in person?
The new bardings are fine, but they look a little.....dress-like=p. Although, they look a lot better in person then when I saw them online. The new helmets are great, and have a nice "scaled" effect on the neck area. There is a bar hole on the "forehead".

I always try to avoid weird color differences like that when I'm making minifigures, but it's actually kind of difficult. There are too many different colors that can be used for metal.

Is the King's crown metallic gold instead of the usual color?
Yes, it's metallic. I have the set. He also comes with a nice dark blue cape, too.

I've been gone a long while and I have missed a lot (most of which I am slowly attempting to catch up on), but I didn't seem to notice any mention of the newer LOTR sets coming out.

If this is still appropriate for this thread, am I the only one who has pre-ordered a ton of them? I'm personally in love with Beorn's hairpiece.

Here are some links to what I'm talking about. I apologize if these have been shared before: They're all available on Amazon for pre-order.

I think you're about to be very disappointed in Beorn's hairpiece....

I'm going to play some music very loudly to mask the sounds of my sobs as I read over the proper thread.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction. I hate you for crushing my hairpiece dreams, though.

While not a million miles away from the current Castle sets, TLG has just posted the alternate (non-wacky) build for the Castle Cavalry set from the Lego Movie.

Huh. Depending on the price point, that one might be worth getting just for gatehouse.

Looks pretty cool, IMO, and it's nice to have an alternate build, too :)

Very nice find Andhe, I love the detail, it is a lot better than some of their castle line sets!

Yesterday I got the King's Castle and Gold Getaway at the Lego store.

Gold Getaway is actually quite nice. I really like the prison carriage I thought the build was quite nice nothing fancy but nice. The balista(or however you spell that) is kinda boring but is one of the better uses of flick fires. The little ruins are well missing something but I guess there suppose to look like that. The whole set you get three minifigs and a horse plus a lot of good pieces for $25 Canadian I'd give it a 8.5/10.

The King's Castle design is simple as well but still fun. It may be modular and able to attach to Gate House Raid but there is no combination were both sets can make a perfect four wall castle. Every combination I tried one wall was 2 studs short or something like that. It was very disappointing. Putting that to the side the castle is still pretty good especially in how it looks. The catapult/battering ram that comes with it is well not that good after building it I got the sense of the wealed horses from KK2. Although it makes a funny looking animal well actually it makes a better animal than catapult if you ask me. A good thing about it is that it comes with chrome coins not pearl gold which is always nice. The figs are good two soldiers, a knight, and a kings for the blue lions while the red dragons get two soldiers and a knight. The only problem with the figs is thee is not enough. For $130 you get 7 figs a horse some nice treasure and lots of good pieces. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

An a side not I also got the Lego movie set "Castle Calvary" or something like that and it is an awesome set the crazy vehicle it makes is really fun and the alternate model the gateway is really good. It's has a lot more detail than the other castle sets. The sets has like 16 or more of 1x1 with a stud on the side which are one of the most useful pieces ever. It has two figs Sir Stacabrick and Gallant Guard which aren't really special but still nice. The one problem with it is no shields. I give the set 9.5/10.

I do think, actually, that these sets don't look at all bad, even though they aren't the most fun to build and don't have the greatest pieces. I say this because my brothers always want to get them, yet know (and say) that they're not brilliant. Just an interesting thought, that's all, that they may really appeal to younger children :)

Bah! No photos!!

I wonder if it will be the same dragon fig as Dragon Mountain, but with a different, more "Smaug-like" head? Witch King and some other new figs sound promising! :D
