But then I tried to buy last year through e-bay. Like 4 times! I don't what it is, but for some reason I am cursed not to get this set - even when I bid some crazy high price for it someone swoops down and steals it from me at the last moment.
Ahhh....

there's something to be said for "timing"!!!

After years of bidding over 100 dollars on e-bay for this set and never winning... I suddenly won it for less that 50 bucks!!!

First Boston's curse... and now Kings Fortress.... strange times...!!!!

:-)

(just wanted to share my victory/happiness) :-) :-)

Well last month I bought this set on Ebay and it is great! I have been waiting a long time to buy this set, because I don't want to pay crazy prices like € 50,- or more! En then the extra shippingcost from England, that are usually more than € 15,-. But I have been very fortunated, I bought this set for € 35,- (shipment included)!
So imagine how happy I was! It is the first set for me with a raised baseplate, the minifigures are good, it has nice pieces and it has great playability. I now have connected it with 6080, the armour shop & the Inn and it looks great. Now I am planning to make one of my first MOC with the 6081 included!

Thanks for digging up this thread!

This would have to be one of my favourite castle sets. It was my only large castle when I was a kid. (Forrestmen's river fortress isn't really a castle). This was the only set I decided to keep when I entered my dark ages and I'm glad I did.

While it is a bit open for most people's taste, for one it is a 'mountain' fortress so for me it sits at the end of a narrow pass. Also, with all castle sets that can't fold outward, kids need room to get thier hands inside. I know when I was 8 yrs old, my 6081 wasn't sitting on a shelf gathering dust :)

Ovarall 10/10

This thread causes me great pain ...

That was the only set from the 1993 and 1994 catalogues I never managed to buy. It was always sold out. Once even somebody bought the last one just a couple of minutes before me. Oh, the misery, the pain!...

Well, I'm off to eBay!

My first castle set and still one of my favorites. IT just looks so elegant and idilic. I love the main tower and the great use of the baseplate. And the castle looks great from all angles.

I guess it's not so bad having a whole lot of baseplates now. 8)

I've just noticed that this set looks like the Fort Eldorado from the pirate theme. The prison construction along with the main construction is very similar, not to mention the low walls.

(On a second glance, they don't look that much alike, but still similar)

Since this topic was resurrected, I'll chime in.

This is one of the few large Castle sets that I never had as a kid. I always wanted it, and I still do. Now, technically it's not one of the strongest in terms of design, but to me this 'castle' has a ton of character. I'm not sure how else to describe it than that - I just think it's a really fantastic looking set. There are few large Castle-theme sets that I like more than this one.

And I still don't have it.

As for pieces, it's true that LEGO was starting to succumb to the 'less is more' theory that now is crippling their sets. But it still represents a 'better time' for the Castle theme. Plenty of pieces, and good ones at that. Personally, I have no problem with baseplates, and I never had any trouble finding alternate uses for them as a kid, that I can remember. Good selection of figures and figure-equipment, too.

Just a great set, overall. Hopefully I'll have it one of these days when I can afford to drop 70 bucks or more on a single set.

I seen this set before in a glass case at my cousins and I must say it has a odd design but I like it. Lets start with the castle itself the castle is on a raised baseplate, so walls don't have to be that high. Two remember we comparing this set with sets that was 30 dollars more expensive like 6086, which has 100 more pieces. Three the unqiue items, the black bird, the crossbows,(at the time) the plants, and princess couldn't be found but in one set 11/10 Edit: to much score and more detail!

Not a great castle by any stretch, but far better than most of what was released in the second half of the 1990s. The blue maiden is unique to this set, and a very nice piece for any castle collection.

The castle itself is alright. It certainly looks pleasant, even if it isn't very defendable. Still, this wasn't an expensive set, and it did give you two mounted knights, several corner walls, and a decent mix of grey bricks. Definitely worth picking up for the right price.

7/10

Interesting set, sort of exploring what can be done with the base plate (which was new at this time).

Some great parts and classic figs. I was always disappointed that the falcons never got a barding. :(

All in all I'd say 7/10

Solid but not outstanding.
