Some observations on the LEGO Viking line
Hey all,
I created a new thread because the original was starting to get rather bulky.
There has been some discussion about the new axes. Chris and I have talked and we are certain that the one-bladed axe is made of a new axe head and a HP wand. The two-bladed axe head is made out of a long bar and two axe heads, like so:

Also, here's something on the helmets:

And on the weapons:

I was studying the Ship up close for the first time, a few minutes ago, and realized that it has more figures than I'd thought at first. I count 9 definately, and 10 possibly. And there certainly could be more hidden in the back, under the canopy. Oh, I hope this set doesn't change much before it's released.

I'm actually wondering what material the beards are made of. I'm fairly certain that they are not fabric, as they seem to cast shadows. I'm hoping for rubber beards like Hagrid's. I wouldn't mind a solid ABS plastic beard though. It also looks like there are several different patterns for the beards. I hope that these patterns aren't pre-determined by the colour of beard.
I'm also a bit put off by the red wood in 7019. I really want to believe that its the photograph, but looking at the new brown pieces in my collection, I really think that this set is going to be very red.
Does anybody know what colours the weapons and helmets are? It seems that there are black helmets, but are the other helmets chromed, or is this just lighting?
Later.

There are two different axe blade styles. The double-bitted axe does indeed seem to be mountable as a single or double bladed axe - very cool. The blade itself is a double-flaired style typical of many two-handed danish axes, but there seems to be a second "bearded" single-blade axe. The hafts seem to be an "umbrella stand" and a wand/light sabre blade. I must say I like the haft and blade being two parts since I can make the weapons long or short hafted at will.
The shields seem to be a decorative version on a 3x3 radar dish, and a much more accurate version that the figs actually carry. Alas that the former seem to be in greater supply than the latter when all that is needed is the latter. They are not the old fashioned "trash can lid" round shields.
Helmets with horns. They seem to be optionable, so I am happy. The two different helmet styles are reasonably Viking (at least in inspiration), so again I'm happy.
Beards. Just too blurry for me to get a handle on.

Wouldn't that be great if they were really round shields? I think they are. ANd there is definately chorme euro armor!
I just think that the "red" fort is the new brown. Not "red". And the new brown isn't THAT bad.
I have to agree with Nahtan about the axes. Now We can have some realistic looking weapons! THough, I don't know how these vikings are goign to mix with my other LEGO. They jsut seem a bit megablockish. LEGO is supposed to be simple. I miss the old smiley faces.

The flat shields are actually this piece:
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/2958
with a plunger piece in it for the handle. You can see this clearly in the ship image with the viking about to fall over the side. I would have preferred old round shields but this other piece is likely easier to print on or have stickers on it.

From our last news (provided by one of our collest member ) is that the beards are not real but 3d simulated ones.

How awful!! I mean, here we are with what is possibly one of the best lines from Lego in years, and the beards may just be mock-ups! I really can't figure Lego out at times.Jipay wrote:From our last news (provided by one of our collest member ) is that the beards are not real but 3d simulated ones.
Still, the line is looking pretty good (providing that there aren't any more surprises)!
Later (and praying for REAL beards!).

If your deduction is correct, then they made a very specific shield boss part to snap onto it. I'm not familiar with this part or it's relative size to a minifig (edit in: duh, it's clearly shown against the studs in the photo, so its size does indeed look right to be the new shield), so I can't add a voice yea or nay to this.architect wrote:The flat shields are actually this piece:

In any case, what they have looks much more like a viking shield than the old "trash can lid" round shield, so I'm pleased with the change, however it was wrought.

I am totally convinced that, as Ben said, the new shields are merely these
with these
for handles.
They are exactly the same size as 3x3 radar disks, and they look very good, IMO.
The shields have pretty intricate designs, too. Notice the 1/2 and 1/2 shield on the right side of the tower on the fortress. It's 1/2 one design and 1/2 another. Not sure I like it, but it's interesting...
