What do you think of minifigs faces ?

We can divide minifigs faces in 3 periods.

1- from the minifigs debut to 1990
All minifigs has the same smile
2- from 1990 to 1996
Lego start to make smiley minifigs with hair and beard
but continue to put smiley figures without hair or
beard
3- from 1996 to today
Lego start to make differents expressions for each
minifigs and stopped making smiley figures

What do you think of them.

For me, the first period is my favorite because of the nostalgy, but, the second is the better, because with them you can multiply the possibilities to make nice minifigs and they don't make you ugly faces.

The 3 and last period is the worst. Why don't lego just let us imagine the personnality of our minifigs. I hate very much their faces. Bad people can have fun sometimes. No ?

I prefer that lego let us imagine what we want. We are able to choose who are bad or good, who are happy or not. They kill child imagination.

I vote for 1990-1996 lego faces.

Sorry dude your wrong. At least for mini fig faces in general. The 1989 Black Seas Barracuda had no plain smiley faces. And the female pirate doesn't have the basic smilely face. This according to you would't appear untill 1997. If you mean only Castle you may be right however the Black Knight had a beard, but that may be 1900+ I'm not 100%sure.

Hello!

True, the first non-smilie faces appeared when the Pirates line was first released: That's been in 1989. Those minifig heads still had solid studs BTW.

Knights from 1990 still had plain smilie faces except the maiden from 6081 King's Mountain Fortress. The first knights with beards appeared in 1992.

Bye

Ok. I made a fault in my date. But that's not dramatic.

If I remember well, we are in a Castle discussion. So Lego make beard and hair on their pirate in 1989, but they adapted it in castle in 1990.

For me, the lady is not the third categorie. She has the same smile as the other minifigs from second period, but she has make up. We can't put her in the third categorie. She is smiling. The same smile + make up. That's the difference.

It's not that lego faces from 1996 to today are not smiling. It's because each minifigs has a different expression.

I don't think the printed faces kill a child's imagination. My son and I build large armies and all of the printed castle heads do is add some character to otherwise generic soldiers. We have a band of 40 mercenaries all with different printed faces. If anything the printed heads encouraged a more diverse creation of characters. I voted for 1990 - 1996. Generic solldiers need simpler heads, but I also enjoy the more diverse printed heads from 1996 - today. These heads have become the generals, mercenaries, merchants and maidens for my collection. My army is well over 1400 figs, those figs would get pretty boring if they were all smiling. I did scrap most of the bull heads from my collection though, they just weren't generic enough.

The result is not like a think it will be. Many people think that faces from debut to 1990, and from 1990 to 1996 are the best. This is what I think too, but I didn't expect that only smiley face are equal in preference has second period.

The result for the 1996 to today is not suprising. Most people think that they are something OK, but sometimes ugly.

The smile of the minifig makes the difference... :)

They seem to be happy, and suggest us to be happy too !
