32x32 Challenge: Sansalias

Now that my assessment's done, here's my entry to the "Trevor/Eric Awesome 32 Castle Build Off Challenge!"

Sansalias was a fun build- when the challenge was issued I kinda scoffed at the idea of the restrictions, but I enjoyed building and trying to fit everything I wanted in. I think because it's smaller you're inclined to spend even longer on the details, so I spent quite a bit of time on the wall break-ups, throwing in all sorts of bricks. There's no interior unfortunately, but i've tried to make the most of the courtyard. Because of the size restrictions, capturing this was kinda difficult, but hopefully you get a fair idea of what's all there. There's no overlap off the baseplate at all.

Thank you sirs for the challenge- it's been great seeing what everyone's produced. :)

I just love your colour choices and as has been said before, the dark red smattering on the roof is gorgeous. I like the way you used plates to mottle the interior walls to off set some of the larger pieces used on the outside, it kind of brings the scale down a bit. The stable underneath the house is a good idea, that should keep the residents nice and warm during winter and the stone around the door in nice too. This all seems pretty similar in concept to what I'm working on at the moment. I do have a nitpick though, the torches beside the front gate. Those flame pieces usually look to me to be too awkward or magical (but whatever) but it's the tile clip with the flame stuck in it that bugs me. It's got too much of an unfinished look, especially compared to obvious thought that was put into the rest of the MOC.

This is an excellent build, Richard. The mottling in the walls and the roof is beautiful, and the bit of landscaping you did around the walls really makes it stand out. If I had built this, I probably would have built the walls all the way to the edge to make the courtyard as big as possible. You did right by not succumbing to that. It looks much better that way. You also used the minimal space of the courtyard effectively. Nitpicks: I think you should have given the courtyard floor a little more personality. A little mottling of brown or dk tan, or something of the like, rather than a single uniform color. But that is a very minor issue for such a well-rounded creation. Build on!

I like how this turned out. The roof was what I noticed immeadiatly as well. I think it looks great. The things I like the most are the wooded catwalks (which I don't see much of even though their vast use in real castles), The tudor styled house done with brown (I always use black), and the use of landscaping on a such small build (a bold and sucessful venture that is just screaming for technic pins to add more terrain onto). I also like the thickend archway that the travelers are going through. It just gives it that extra dimention. I'll admit, the restriction did keep the courtyards to a minimum and make it very difficult to play within. This is one of those MOCs that to me give a feeling of being real (if you know what I mean). :D

I like the color combinations. As others have mentioned, the roof with the different colored red pieces looks great, and I like the white walls with the blue shutters as well. You did a great job fitting everything on there as well, it doesn't look cluttered or too busy.

The MOC looks excellent. I believe it looks like something that would fit in nicely in a medieval world as a modest Lord/Earl/Rich Guy's rural fortress. Very nice.

Cool stuff Richard,
I really dig that roof and the tudor part as well.
Also nice mottling in the stone walls :)

I ran out of carrotpoo. I've got more pieces somewhere i'm sure but I couldn't find them. :(

It is real, I built it out of real Lego bricks.

Thank you all. :)

I thought I had already commented on this one, but I guess not.
Great job, Richard! I think you really nailed the idea of "tightening" the 32x32 castle.
Elements of both keep and the town within are present, without looking choked or crammed together.
The color scheme is excellent too, very "classic fantasy."
The wooden decking along the battlements is a nice touch! I've been trying to achieve that effect for a while, but you pulled it off expertly, sir!
