Artillery

Post by Aviah102 »

I am open to any suggestions on making artillery for an army. I want the artillery that I will use to be realistic, but so far most of the machines I have seen have some fancy gears that I do not currently own. If anyone has any suggestions on what to use for atleast decent looking artillery, that would be great.

Decent-looking?

So far all I have is moderately functional. A couple of wheeled catapult thrown together for the purpose of lobbing stones. I have no idea how historically accurate they'd be.

One of these days I'll take pics and upload 'em.

Have you looked into official catapult designs from the 80s and 90s? Some look pretty good, most thrown a decent brick, and I think they are generally good at incorporating mainly common pieces. I'm sure with slight modification most anyone could make them. Instructions can be found on Brickshelf, naturally.

That ballista is minifig-scale, but does not actually function. Stay tuned for more ballistas soon,

I wouldn't mind seeing an extra shot / angle or two. Looks like a simple but creative design.

Kinda reminds me of pics of very early cannons.

I'm not sure if I agree or not, the pic does make it a little difficult to look at. Nonetheless, there is something very Civil War era about it.

Maybe its the way it sits.

Regardless, it looks great.

Again, that is an awesome cannon, but it looks just like an american civil war one.

Im actually just looking for any relatively simple design for seige weapons (although it does not have to be all that simple). Any small design would do, however, I'm not following a western theme and do not want my castle soldiers to get ahead of their time, lol (I do know that cannons were first used in battles during the early 1300's, though, they do not interest me so I will place my castle theme before that time). Thanks for the feedback, the cannon has a nice looking design lone ranger.

Also, thanks for the actual seige machine pictures JPinoy. Even as I have seen such photos before, the ones you have sent may inspire me to try creating one on my own.

Looking good LR, I could probably reproduce this without any extra pics, but you go ahead and post them.

I'd check out the various creations by James Brinks:
http://www.mocpages.com/home.php/652
Look at the Black Falcon's Trebuchet, the two Crusaders' Trebuchets, and the Onager. He's got instructions for one of them here:

I also like this one by "Emperor-James" and recently built a version based on it:

Or you could go more minimalist like this by Dark Admiral:
