Here is my latest creation, a realistic and functional medieval crane, that will be presented at the french convention Fanabriques 2012, in june/july, on the medieval diorama, Archenval.

In fact, it's strange but it isn't too fragile. I will put a minifig in the wheel during the french convention and it isn't a problem with that

very cool I like how it looks like there are metal bands wrapped around the wooden parts of the weel, was that intentional or just because they don't make those parts in brown?

They only came in old brown, and look to be pretty rare in that color. Whether the color choice was intentional or not, I have to agree with Lord of Orks, the black looks great.

Yes it's intentional. As you have said, all parts in black color symbolise in fact metal parts.

As I said at Flickr, a little explanation about the technical construction of the wheel :

The base is not complicated: it is a cross formed of round plates and round bricks 1 x 1, and assembled on a cross (Technic, Axle Hub Connector with 4 Bars)

The circle of the wheel, it is composed of four parts: "Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Clip Light - Thick Ring" of both sides, a "Plate 1 x 6," the "light clip" in opposition relative to each other, in which comes to slide "Stop with a Bar 6L Ring", and "tile 1 x 4" between the two "Light clip" to finish.

This technique allows to adjust the angle variations and thus to define different angles. Therefore, any constraint on the inter-axis.
