CCCIX Cross-Category Awards

Hey all,

You read that right, CCCIX. Yes, I'm that far behind the times. Somehow I never posted these, and I just realized this when I went to post cross-category awards for CCCX. I really apologize. These custom ranks will stay in place for the foreseeable future, unless, of course, these builders gain new ranks as part of CCCX. Hey, maybe I intended to do this now as an inspiration for the new CCC. I do promise to be more prompt on the next set.

The envelope please ...

Most humorous entry - Make us laugh!
There were some great entries here. Glory Forever's Operation Chimney Sweep is certainly a masterful build, and the action is both intense and funny. I thought the use of the DUPLO Stretch legs as hair gave Scootercide's Medusa a pretty funky hairdo. Monty Python references are always good, as in Liftkilt's Fetchez la vache!, and, at least in my mind, when I saw mahds' to kill the dragon man I heard the Python gang yelling 'Run away! Run away!' (though maybe that just reveals more about me. Nanuck made a great run at keeping his title with his Tess Thug, Bumbles and old man who lives in a cave down by the river (at least in my mind this is the medieval version of Chris Farley, but again, maybe that reveals more about me). I thought Shmail's Sid the Cyclops was hilarious, and particularly like that he's a scaled-up minifigure. In the end, though, the title of 'Court Jester' goes to Peter de Yeule for his hidden treasure.

Most dramatic entry - Make us cry!
Several of the entries evoked strong emotions. in Shmails' Flames of Fury you can feel the fear of the fleeing peasants, including the one leaping from a window. Zed0's long forgotten is full of tension. Lolino's Holy Grail is one of the most bleakly beautiful MOCs I've seen, with just this subtle feeling of sadness. ShadowViking's hardships of a warrior shows the burial of fallen comrades. LokosuperfluoLEGOman's Ides of March conveys the drama of Caesar's assassination. Peter deYeule's Black Dragon Attacks is certainly action packed and exciting. In the end the title of Groom Extraordinary of the Chamber goes to Busboy489 for his Knight's Quest. The whole thing is wonderful, but the third scene "On His Knee the Knight Doth Fall, For Others Sake He Gives it All" is particularly moving.

Innovative building technique - Make us wonder how you did that!
Of course every CCC brings out new and innovative building styles. Blego7's MOCs were full of great ideas, but I'd point out his roast mutton as a prime example - I particularly like how he built the trolls part in color and part in gray to capture them right at the point they were turning to stone. Glory Forever's Operation Chimney Sweep is all about build techniques - the door, the use of fig legs as architectural details, the swan, the tree, the bird nest, but mostly the place where shingles have come off the roof. I really love how Frank Lloyd Knight's Masters of Disguise incorporates the the sun, clouds and textured trees into the backdrop, and also that great little castle in the distance - the only complaint there is that it's so blocky - plates would have led to smoother shapes. Jovian's enchanted waters is pretty basic as a technique - just all one plate stacked on top of another - but the mixture of trans and blue leads to a real illusion of depth, and the shaping is wonderful. I've already said how much I loved Busboy's Knights Quest and here I'd like to point out the detail of the windows in particular - the flex tubing is perfect. Also, the beards as melting candle wax is a wonderful idea. Siercon and Coral's water nymph is just too cool for words, and the piles of trans plates as splashing waterfall work wonderfully. I'm a sucker for great architectural detail, and check out the doorway to Thire5's cathedral. LokosuperfluoLEGOman's Idvs Martiae is great, but what really makes it is that little glimpse of distant buildings through the doorway. You really have to watch the video for Fat Tony's siege weapon. In the end, though, the nod goes to V&A Steamworks for his dungeon party (actually his whole series of large figures). They're just packed with interesting connections, NPU, and the shaping of the faces is really outstanding. He becomes our 'royal alchemist'.

Best series - For three or more entries that are somehow related to each other. They may share a building style, all focus on the same faction, combine to tell a story, connect to make one larger scene, or work together in some other way.
There were really three serious contenders here. Mark of Falworth told an episodic story of King Aldewulf's treasure, plus his MOCs have a real stylistic connection. Blego7 of course won Master Builder with his Hobbit series. But here the honors go to Shmails, whose Bear Claw Clan storyline has lasted him through several CCCs. I'm naming him 'Bard of the Royal Court'.
Image

Best use of fire - Ignite your imagination and somehow use the idea of fire in your entry.
Theboywarrior's Raid on Rinehart Village uses a flame as spilled wine, which was clever. I really like the flames leaping from the tree to the rooftop in Shmails' Flames of Fury, also the smoke and charred ground. There were several great examples of fire breathing dragons, including these by Blego7, Medieval Guy, Peter de Yeule, and ptLeskinen. Brikule's Dovahkiin vs. Dragon mixes different types of flame in an interesting way, so he becomes 'servant of the secret fire'.
Image

Best use of Hugh - Incorporate our new mascot, Hugh, into your scene somehow.
Hugh got to visit several MOCs, including some by legokilt, Griffon, and KumpelKante (Okay, I have to say it. Could you, would you, with a goat? Would you, could you on a boat?). He went on quests, faced danger, met old friends. In the end, though, it was Elephant Knight who devoted the most attention to Hugh, and even gave him a home, so he becomes 'Squire of Sir Hugh'.

Hey guys,

I'm going to let this thread go so the current CCCX can reign at the top of the forum. These builders will keep their titles for the foreseeable future, unless of course they win new titles as part of this year's contest.
