My third and last entry for the CCCX (architectural detail): the door of Saint George.



The door of Saint George is the main door to Saint George Chapel of Windsor castle*, which is where the Order of the Garter convenes every year. Here Edward of Woodstock meets his sister Isabella who's soon to become a lady of the Garter.

* as a word of warning, not much in this backstory makes any sense...

Cool! I like the stained glass windows and the use of the trophies, but putting a statue right in the middle of a doorway like that seems odd.

I like the use of trophies and those smaller minifig statues.
I agree about the statue in the middle of the doorway, but what do I know?

Looks great! The trophies look great indeed. The statue is okay actually, I know a church in my hometown which has two different doors as a doorway, with a little piece of wall between them, so adding a statue there is such a big deal to me

Although I cannot judge how common it was, having a statue in between the two leaves of the door was not unseen. See for example the following link:

Now you're right that it looks somewhat odd, I wanted to have the pillar behind the statue a bit more visible... should spend some more time experimenting on it.

By the way, the illustrations above come for the "dictionnaire raisonné de l'architecture", written in the XIXth century by Viollet-le-Duc. Although the book (a bit dated) is in French and might not appeal to an English-speaking audience, it's full of gorgeous illustrations. You may find the 10 (!) volumes on the link above or a abridged version in print.

Hey,

Is this based on a particular door? It doesn't look to me like the main entry to St. George's. Actually, it looks more like the door to Westminster, with the larger statue in the middle and the smaller ones in the arch above. Just a question due to interest, not anything relevant to judging.

Nope it's not based on a particular design, more like the illustrations I cited above and what I could come up with lego parts...

It is not based on St George's chapel, as I indicated I made up the whole thing, sorry if I misled people! I built the whole thing and then had to name it, St George sounded like a good choice considering the statue.
