Hey all,

Last June, members of the Portuguese LUG Comunidade 0937 had a public show Arte em Peças (Art in Pieces). Attendees participated in the construction of a massive (!) mosaic of the Torre de Belém.

Wow that is just amazing! The amount of detail is stunning! I can't imagine how big this must be!

That is just fascinating. I didn't see the size of the mosaic mentioned anywhere? Any measurement?

This! Man, the time and patience to set down every little piece in the right spot is incredible! Phew... must have gotten a bit tiring near the end.

As noted in the full write-up on the front page, this is 16 32x32 baseplates wide and 12 high. This is a little over 13 feet wide by 10 feet high (4 meters wide by 3 m high). If you click through the link you can see WIP shots that include people, so you can get a sense of the scale.

Again, as noted in the full write-up on the front page, this was a group participation mosaic at a show over ten days. People who came to the exhibition could put together 32x32 baseplates (using 2x2 plates), which then got put together to make the whole thing. Over 300 people got involved, making 196 separate 32x32 mosaics.

The real tedious part had to be the Comunidade 0937 members who came up with the design, printed out 196 different instruction pages, and made sure they had enough pieces for the whole thing. This used 49,152 2x2 plates in what looks like 9 different colors.

Amazing stuff! Those Portuguese really have it going on over there!

Were actually 12 colors (Dark Bluish Gray, Blue, Black, Light Blue Gray, Reddish Brown, tan, white, Medium Blue, Green, Lime Orange and Red). We used a software (PicToBrick) to transform the picture in a mosaic. Then I made a small program in MS Excel to pick the parts list generated by PicToBrick and generated the sheets with the instructions for each baseplate. The most boring phase was sorting the parts needed for each of the baseplates. So we had one more security on each baseplate were used the correct parts.
