Marius laughed. Every day a captain in the Queen's army would visit Marius's cell. And every day, Marius would laugh. Every day the captain would tell Marius to write a letter to his wife, telling her and Shieldbury to surrender, and every day Marius laughed. Then, every day, Marius would refuse. Every day, the captain would beat Marius with a thick wooden rod, one blow for every single soldier of the Queen who died in battle against Shieldbury. And Marius would laugh, because every blow meant another victory. He began counting the blows after the second day. And so far, the number was over five hundred individual blows. Over five hundred warriors destroyed. And Marius would laugh...

Marius and the Hunting Dragon knight leant against the wall. The knight's name was Bartram, and he instructed Marius to be silent as they gazed into the door to a supply closet. Through the window, they saw several of the Queen's soldiers enjoying the last of a barrel of wine...
