A Lumbering Process

Post by jtooker »

A trio of scenes showcasing the process of transforming trees into shields in medieval times. These workers are from the town of Batuhan, in northern Kaliphlin. This MOC is my entry into the Ye Olde Woodes category of the 2020 Colossal Castle Contest (CCC XVIII).

The first vignette shows loggers at work. Two are using their axes to chop down a linden tree. Linden wood (or basswood) is light and easy to work with making it a great for shieldsmithing. A third man guides a horse pull along a felled tree.

Logged trees make their way to the sawmill shown in the second scene. The water wheel powers the saw blades reducing the amount of manual effort needed to create lumber from logs. A sawmiller pushed the tree through the machine. At the other end, lumber falls in a cart (not shown) to be taken to the lumberyard or carpenters.

Shieldsmiths take the linden lumber planks and cut them to the right size and then plane them. The carpenter (center) uses a cabinet scraper to smooth the wood surface. The blacksmith (right) hammers out an iron band to reinforce the shield. A painter (left) applies heraldry to a fully constructed shield.

Really strong series of builds here jtooker! The workshop view is my favorite, I love how you were able to fill that space with so much detail.

Hi John,

the base is very good and the MOCs are getting better from stage to stage. The guy in the sawmill is insane! :) The workshop is great as it is.

Cheers,
Adam

This is a really great MOC. I love how much texture the tree has and the mushrooms really fit in. That technique of using the half gear for the mushroom has been used a lot lately. I'll have to try it out. My Ye Olde Woods entry is the one called Logging in the Fall. It the one with the castle and the waterfall.

Really cool MOC here, but my favorite would have to be the Sawmiller especially because water technique you used. Great work!!!
Bishons,

The key to good MOC building is a large brain and a kinda big wallet

mrcp6d, thanks! Its the first interior I've done in a while. I tried to make it detailed without being too busy.

Rifiröfi, I'm glad you like them. I like how the base 'connect' them together stylistically, since otherwise they are completely separate MOCs.

minoboys, I definitely stole the mushroom/gear idea and agree it looks good. You're series is terrific too. I'm pretty sure I commented elsewhere that I like the water fall the most. I feel you captured the 'work' being done better in your pictures (two in particular) than I did.

Bishons, the sawmill is my favorite, and the one I spend the most time planning out. Sadly, I did not get the 'saws' in the photographs (used the old halberds).
