*note to self: never, ever name your LEGO creations after a Lord Of The Rings character, lest thou offendeth the all-powerful fanatics*

Ok, first off, the only reason I called this little beast 'Balrog' is because it sounded cooler than demon. I thought (incorrectly) that balrogs were common fantasy fodder, like elves and dwarves, while in fact they are like Orcs (created by Tolkien but used by everyone now).

So, I'm sorry I caused all this confusion, and I forgive you guys for hijacking my thread.

To everyone else: thanks for the comments! The vignette thing won't work for two reasons, first, he's been Sorted already, and second, he's actually too big for a 6x6 or 8x8 baseplate.

Bruce: If you have a moniter with light settings, you can look at this pic: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/lordo ... gsneak.jpg

but if your moniter is set dark like mine, all you'll see is and orange blob in a dark void.

Thanks again for the comments!

Formendacil: Unfortunately(alas and alack!) I don't own a copy of TFOTR, or else I would quote the description of the balrog. I have yet to find a used copy of it(though I have multiples of TTT and ROTK). I'm not saying I'm certain that it said that, only that I seemed to recall it(it's been a few years since I read it.)

All right Nate, I'll get out of your thread now. :P

(Whips out one of his copys of the book and sniggers evily)

I quote "What is was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of a man-shape maybe, yet greater; and a power and terror seemed to be in it and to go before it."

"and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings."

Thats all that Tolkien wrote, so I guess there is no clear description. And, as Nathan said, this isn't a LOTR Balrog.

Now that is a really neat Lego-built monster. Nice use of Vladek's helmet too. And the Griffon's wings were genius. If only the official Viking monsters in the sets were like this. *dreaming*

Nate,

You've already sorted this guy!?!?! :( He's way too cool for that and should have hung out for a while longer. Oh well.

That dark picture is pretty cool and would make a good background if you wanted to do a web-page with light-colored text on a dark background.

For the record, maybe it would work to use indirect lighting to get the glow effect in a pic that wasn't completely dark--leave the overhead light off, and set a desk lamp or something so that it is not very near the MOC being highlighted and the light is bouncing off a wall. I've done some playing around with lighting, sometimes to better or worse effects. There are several examples in this chapter of my LotR story.
