George's Castle by Legopirate1

Post by Bruce N H »

Hi all,

I don't know who Legopirate1 is, but he seems to work at Legoland. Anyway, this castle is very nice. He takes the 1x3 brick and 1x1 cylinder round tower scheme, and extends the pattern throughout the structure, which I'd never seen before.

A cool design. I really like this MOC. It is pretty simple but has some very ncie details.

I really like the rounded tower and how he did the same design throughour the whole MOC.

I would really like to know who this guys is.

Thanks for sharing Bruce! :D

I have ultra mixed feelings about this castle!

The Good:

Way to go with the curving technique, that tower is nicely done, and it is good to see that you have found ways to add detail (ex. the stained glass) to the tower.

The roof is also nicely done, but it looks much better from a distance.

The Bad:

With all those 1X3 and 1X1 round, why not make the whole castle differnt shapes. What I mean is the castle is way to boxy. Symetry can be pulled off nicely, but this looks well to bulky and unatural, I would have liked to have seen the walls go straigt from the tower, not bend around.

I like the large rounded tower the best although the roof is a bit off center.
It's the only castle I've ever seen which is entirely comprised using the 1x1 cylinders & 1x3 bricks. It looks very unique but it's not a design I would use personally.

Ooh, I like it. Simple, yet it has nice details. I like the contiguous wall design.

He must work at Legoland, since he's using an 8x8 round tile in brown for the table, which according to peeron, doesn't exist.

I'm also not familiar with the white torso seen in this picture. And I can't quite figure out what the thing in the middle of the middle of the table in that same picture is made of. It's obviously a 1x1 cone, with a piece(white technic 1/2 pin?) on it, with perhaps a minifig hand holding another unknown piece? I thought at first it was a red feather, but it's the same viewed from both sides.

*edit*
Looking around his b-shelf folder, I found some really kool stuff. I love his pirate ship, and he's got an awesome cannon designthat I'm definately going to have to steal. Pity it's out of focus.

Not bad...

Still, I'm not fond of the 1 x 3 and 1 x 1 round mixture to create curved surfaces. Something about it just doesn't look right to me. Still, it is nice that he kept the pattern going throughout the castle. Most builders I've seen only use this to make a few round towers which look completely at odds with the rest of the MOC.

Also, the tower doesn't seem to work as a keep. It just doesn't look right...

Later.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I just don't like it.
As an exercise in building I applaud the "outsdie the brick" imagination. But the look made my 7 year old son call it the Swiss Cheese castle! It just doesn't look right as someone else posted in this thread. If I worked at legoland I'd get some cooler castle pieces!

The repeating 1x3/round pattern just is too much to look at over an entire castle. Yes, round towers do look a little out of place against a regular wall, but I just don't think this is the way to go. Why not keep that pattern, but use it only around the top, or put a batter in and then use it for a couple courses above that, for a little detail and to tie in the round tower? This look may work very well to get the weathered effect that has been talked about in other threads. Use it on the wall that would get the worst of the weather? That may give a look of both texture and color mottling with the shadows the rounds create.

I think the repeating pattern of round 1x1 cylinders and 1x3 bricks are a bit of an eyesore. Further, I wish the defensive tower/keep had crenellations.

I think it kinda breaks up the BGW. The overall design (IMO) is okay but noe great. I might try something like this for a nobles house or something like that.

It's an innovative idea to extend the cylinder construction technique throughout the castle, and goes a long way to making the tower fit in, but it's not a look I particularly like, and for what it's worth, I have to agree with DM that something about the Castle's general shape looks wrong. Too boxy or something. It doesn't have quite the same problem close up, but there are the cylinders...

Hmm... I wonder what those (flat) walls would have looked like with regular 1x1s instead of cylinders...

Hey, really neat looking! I actually like the semi-boxieness. I really like the use of 1x3s and 1x1 rounds.

I just love the MOC doors! He did a good job on the round tower roof as well.

Neat little MOC!
