You get a large gray baseplate and a border of 2x4 black slopes (all useful for the castle builder). The trick is to design your own mosaic so you get almost all dark gray, gray, and very light gray.

One problem--if you order a mosaic now, I'll bet it's all in new grays. Does anyone know about this?

The mosaic process itself is a tedious build, but has a very nice result. I made this as a gift for my SO (who collects Pooh):

What is all this fuss about the new grays? AFAIK, there are about 3 or 4 grays-lt grey, dk grey, very lt grey. Isn't that it?

Wow, great house! I like the tourist Ben E. put there taking a pic. And by the way, thanks for showing us how you angled the building, Ben.

Hi Mr D.

This isnt me actually. It is another Ben (and I am not sure which Ben it is)

The creation is great. :D I love the rough stone look. The different shades of grey work because the plates are 1x1. At this smaller scale it looks good, I am not convinced about larger scales.

Sorry about that, Ben, I just supposed it was you.

Dan,

My mosaic uses the old grays (including the very light gray that was, I believe, only available in that set at that time). As of the first of the year, new sets include the new mix of grays that have a blue-er tint. I assume that new mosaic sets will also include the new grays, though I am not sure on that.

Ben and Mr. D.,

The fisherman's house is by Reinhard "Ben" Beneke. He posts occasionally on Lugnet (mainly in the .trains forum), but I think he's mainly a 1000steine.de guy (Jojo, can you confirm that?).

Isn't he helping out with the Colossal Castle Contest with the judging?

Hi Dan,

Maybe you are thinking of a CC admin Ben M. (who could help judge). I am Ben E - chair of the "save the pitchfork committee", sets admin, and admin of a bunch of other stuff

Reinhard "Ben" Beneke is a great builder who does post at 1000stiene. The Colossal Castle Contest is not connected in any way with 1000steine or their International System Creativity Contest. The only connection is that people could enter creations into both contests, assuming that they meet our category requirements.

That's just awesome! I love that wall. It looks great from the outside but I wonder how sturdy it is, and if it has to be held together on the inside wth beams etc? I also owonder how hard it was to attach the roof, how the lego geometry work etc, but clearly the builder has managed it somehow.

This is the kind of thing that never ceases to amaze me, when someone hads acheived a completely new look that I hadn't hadn't even come close to imagining before.

Excellent!

So if I have this right, you're in charge of both the Colossal Castle Contest and the Castle Contest whos end date was just a week or so ago?
