Army battalions "heading" out
When you make armies, how do you choose heads? For me, I try to make them individuals, with atleast one standard smilie for each soldier type. Some people like having the same head for a certain soldier type, but I think it looks strange and cloned... How do you do your armies?

I make sure that each soldier in a faction has a unique head, and I use any heads that are suitable for a castle theme. So if you put two of my factions together, there would be duplicate heads, but not in any one faction. I have also started using custom heads, i.e. heads that had some sort of tech thingie on them and I erased it...
I, too, don't like the look when someone uses the same heads for an entire army. I realize that it would be impossible for the giant army builders to use unique heads on each soldier...I just don't like how it looks. So, I don't do that. That is also why I try to keep my factions around 25-30 figs each. Any more than that and it gets difficult to provide unique heads.
Great topic!
Josh
PS. I need to post new pics of my factions. I noticed I don't have most of them in my Brickshelf gallery and the Black Falcons that are in there all have smilie heads...

It depends on the scale...if I'm making 10 or under guys, usually I use different heads. If I have more than ten, then the characters can't be very important in terms of personality, so I use generic smileys.
I ALWAYS use special heads for characters though.

I agree with Modesty. My Black Falcon army that's over 600 pretty much uses the same head. Only the officers have unique heads. Now if I am making a small force of soldiers, I'll try to make each head unique.

This is my minifig head of choice for my normal soldiers. The head makes them all look mad, serious, sadistic, worried, bored, or all of the above.

I use certain heads for a certain group. Because of that, they look like an army of "cloned" warriors.

For the generic soldiers, I use the smiley head. 'Lieutenants' and any other mid-rank men have a different face (bearded or with moustache, like the Black Knight's Red moustache head); high officers have special faces (batlord's, Vladek's, Danju's heads). That makes the 'unique' characters really unique; soldiers, IMHO, are not that unique, unless one of them have a special spot in my story.

I base my heads on what race they are. For example, for Elves, I use smilies, Lukes, and other beardless faces. For Dwarves however, I use the faces with the biggest beards. It also depends on faction. Forestmen, thieves, etc. get heads that have stubble, bandanas, etc. Nobles have clean shaven or trimmed beards, etc.

What battalions?
I actually try my best to only use the heads that originally came with the figure (as dumb as that sounds), but they get changed so often that I had to vote 'random'. As with everyone else, my special figures usually get special faces, though it doesn't really matter since they never change their clothes.
