Black Falcon's Citadel Update

Post by DaveOhare01 »

Heya! Finally getting back to taking pictures of the progress.

This picture set shows the East wall section as well as the first and second floors or the Wizard's Tower area.

You can see the stables in the base of the wall as well as several guardrooms. There are arrow slits opening into the two hallways and there will be two portcullis in each hallway.

The Northeast corner will also have a large tower, though I've yet to get the base transition in there yet.

Here is the overall picture: Image

And the folder when public -- http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=175447

Let me know what you think!

WOW ! I was wondering when you'd post an update. You probably don't know who I am, but I was looking at your stuff in my lurking days. I loved your black castle, and have been looking forward to updates on this citadel for a while. As the folder is not yet public, I can only comment on what I see here, but that is quite a lot. What I like most about your castles is the size and the amount of detail. The guardrooms look great, with the bunk beds and all, and I like the muddy path. A lot of other castles, while great, lack interior outdoor space (if that made sense), but this one has a real feel of being, well, real. I have always liked the cliffs, and the walls are interesting too. I'll look forward to more updates.

Ah yes, I was wondering what ever happened to this; it's been a while! It's great to see another update, and it looks excellent! Keep it up--I can't wait to see what it's like when it's finished! :D

Heya! Thanks all for the comments! :) I really appreciate it!

Looks like I will be signed up for Brickfest here in a bit, so I will be trucking this monster that direction in August. *chuckle* Not enough time I fear.

Thanks too, smcginnis! I love the feedback and glad you like the castle!

(and I think the main folder is public now...I think they know me over at Brickshelf!)

Great job so far. I can't wait to see the finished monstrosity!

I was wondering though, if you would post some closer pics of the details, like the outside arches/windows/whatever. I would love to see them more. Thanks for posting this update.

HOW DO YOU BUILD STUFF THIS BIG!Do you draw blue prints out before you build it or do you just add what looks good?

Ah!

When I build something large, I just pretty much have a picture in my head of what I'd like the project to look like. I build it in sections and then in levels (typically) -- so the design rather builds itself.

You can look back through the older folders and see each section get built and then how the next section fits into that. However (like right now) I have to skip a section due to a lack of brick and *chuckle* a lack of money. :)

What makes building fun for me (especially building large layouts) is how the entire creation can evolve. The same it true with smaller MOCs, of course, and when things just seem to flow together, you know you've got it right!

Hmmm.I see but it still seems like it would be very difficult.A problem I have with my larger creations is supporting the roof. How did you do it with this particular model?

Ah -- that indeed can be a problem. Putting a roof or floor over a large open space really comes down to nothing but cost. Over most of the underground levels, I build a massive plate, FIVE plates thick. Indeed...the cost.

So, it does make a very strong 'cover' but, building a section the size of 2x2 baseplates (and doing this 12 times over) is a little prohibitive.

The problem is -- I don't have a better way. I like to build rooms large enough you can get your hands in there and move things around. Also, hallways and doorways large enough to play in are important.

So, if you have a better technique *grin* I would def love to hear it! (not kidding) :)
